I feel a bit lost. Fired from my corporate job which I hated, I started to pursue my goal of becoming a clinical psychologist, I applied to universities and got a job in healthcare which I will start soon.
In the meantime, while my life is getting "reorganised", I started feeling an enormous sense of insecurity. I am scared that I am not making the right choices since I know how impactful this return to education will be in my life.

Psychology is the only field that interests me, but at the same time I am a not very empathetic problem solver who does not adhere to Politically Correct culture. I seek scientific truth wherever possible. Given the state of psychology today in the anglosphere, where political ideology is regarded as more important than scientific facts, I am afraid I might not fit in.

In a fit of anxiety and confusion, I asked what is my purpose. The answer was 54 unchanging, which does not make a lot of sense to me when it comes to answering my question, but it seems to describe what I am feeling at the moment.

That said, later I also wrote a small paragraph stating explicitly how I feel about my choice of pursuing psychology and asked the Oracle what to do. The answer was 45.4.5 --> 2 It seems an encouragement to go ahead and move toward my goal.

What do you think? Is the Yi telling me to stop relying on my ego and to "follow" ?

Well, both 54 and its inverse-pair hexagram 53...

...have slowness in common. Processes in 53 take a long time. They move at the speed they move, period. 54 can be about adapting - and the potential in it (line 5) isn't fully realized until the next generation, which in your case might be some line of demarcation between student and established professional.

You didn't get 54.5 or any other lines, though, so they're not specifically part of your answer. For your question what sticks out to me is that 54 overall is about adapting when you're in a subordinate position. In the story, "marrying maidens," as Hilary puts it in her book, are "a group of [the bride's] female relatives who became ‘second wives’."

In other words, Yi seems to be saying an emphatic "yes" to this:

I don't think you necessarily have to fall in with any prevailing ideology as much as don't impose yours. There's a difference. Fit in by keeping your point of view to yourself for now. That's not the same as agreeing with it, but you might have to go along outwardly to some degree. "When in Rome..."

45 echoes that, I think. 45 is a large group gathered together for a big purpose. It's not about you as an individual or your individual effort. Maybe - I don't know, am speculating - it's about joining the larger community of psychologists. I can imagine a career trajectory that starts with learning the field as it exists and later forging your own path when you have more experience, status, and independence.

(That last sentence is very 54-ish, actually - these readings seem to go together nicely.)

Example: while you're in school, you'll have no control over the textbooks, the professors' lectures, or what they'll expect on exams. You must pass your classes, after all. There might be some room for independent thought for instance in your choice of research paper topics, but less in other areas.

2 is also similar - it's receptive. A field accepts what falls on it and makes it grow. A mare gives endless strength and support, but in the direction she's nudged. She doesn't go off on her own initiative.

These 2-ish things are important! The best ideas in the world - which come from hexagram 1 - are utterly useless if hexagram 2 isn't around to make them grow. I think Yi's saying that for a while you need to be in hexagram-2 mode: taking in other people's ideas and making them grow in your own mind.

In theory I could imagine that being an interesting activity. There's nothing stopping you from being the best field / mare you can be, after all. Part of a marrying maiden's mission is to make her environment her own while still fitting in and being the subordinate. That's what adapting is.

In your case, I wonder if it could include private thinking/writing endeavors where you try to work out where your own ideas fit in with what you're taught. The end result might be better than either would be separately.

But most likely you can't just start out telling everyone how wrong they are. You already know that, and it wouldn't fit with any of your hexagrams.

I agree with you the moving lines are encouraging. It seems this could be a good thing for you, provided you adapt and navigate successfully in the meantime.

54 does hold that space of coming to terms with matters that are out of your control. While that may emulate what you feel and what is happening for you now there is a wider sense of purpose that has been laid out before you.

54 carries with it a strong sense of realising your destiny which is best accomplished through gaining an understanding of the wholeness of life experiences and through obtaining a greater appreciation of the flaws in yourself and in others.

Whoops! Once I'd gone down the path of erroneously choosing 43 I just went with the flow. In my own readings when I make an error, I invariably find it useful to consider the package that has been placed on my doorstep by the postman.

Of course, you have to keep safe and take care of yourself.
