I was in a really frustrating situation and said that I just want to not participate in it anymore. I don’t know if the details matter much in this case… but I cast afterward “I don’t want to do this anymore” and got 60.5 > 19

At first I read this as affirmative (“going” brings honor, but then again I’m still a bit confused about coming and going in the I Ching), sort of saying “yes this an ok restriction to make”.

But then I wondered if maybe it’s saying I could or should do something more moderate and diplomatic? I don’t think my approach necessarily qualifies as “sweet measures”.

19 was interesting to me because I realized I actually have had this commitment for about eight months! That’s all I really was able to connect though.

thanks for your help :)

60.5 limit sweetness, lessen it. This can mean sweet behaviour.
If you go on in this manner, there is still some value in it for you.
Coming means backing off, going means proceeding.

Resulting 19 means that you'll need to prepare for an end at some point not too far away :(

So, in this case, “going” would mean proceeding with my course of action (to quit) or proceeding with my prior obligation? Sorry if that was clear I’m just obviously confused by this 😂

Yeah limiting sweetness could definitely make sense here. I do think the nearing end of 19 is accurate.

I do get the gist of what you’re saying though that I need to limit, it could still have some benefit, but probably won’t last long regardless. Is that right?

You haven't started quitting yet, so I don't think it means "continue to quit". More like, proceed more or less on the course you're already on, but limit any sweet actions.

Yes that's what I meant. The character cluster which says 'going has value' could also be seen as 'departing and yet possess'. It gives me the impression of slightly detaching, sort of cooling off. The Xiang Zhuan additional text of this line says 'limit sweet is lucky, sit down/wait/dwell at throne/rank/status/position at the centre'. So again I get the idea of not completely leaving, but aiming for a different flavour of the whole situation. As to what the value of this will be, only the I Ching knows what on earth it means by that.

If you said you had enough and don't want to participate anymore then I'd think this answer is saying it's okay, it won't go on being this hard, that you and others will find a way to proceed that is 'sweet' that is as in 'not bitter'. 60 says if measures or ways of proceeding are too harsh in limits there's bitterness. In any area where one has to impose limits or conditions (60) too much rigour can be counter productive, take dieting for example or anger management. But in line 5 one finds a way to go on that isn't too demanding or restrictive. Hence I don't think you need to give up, you can go on especially if focusing on moderate methods.

FWIW in my own experience this is often a predictive line, it will show something I expect to be too much for me to turn out to actually be fine, much more moderate, paced, manageable than I expected.

The reason it is predictive is perhaps there in the 19. This comes to you, meets you where you need meeting, this isn't only about you struggling on with trying to make things work, conditions get easier anyway.

Thank you all so much! This is helpful. It gives me a lot to think about. I have been feeling frustrated and there are some inner workings I question, like lack of transparency and not supporting the work at really important times. But, it’s true, it’s not all negative. I am very sensitive to signs of inconsistency and have been involved in enough things to not want to waste my time. I can’t say I know exactly what the more moderate course is but I will pause before moving forward or backward and see if I can find another way to approach.

some of the specifics shared were really helpful, including about the translations and the predictive quality of the line. Thank you! There’s nothing as valuable as experience :)
