I asked if I leave this place of residence and person I'm living with, in order to find my own place again for myself and family if it would be for the best/ work out and I received 64 unchanging - Not yet across...

Sounds like I'm not ready to, and that doing so might be detrimental, but I'm not sure.

I'm in a relationship with this person, we both work in this town and it's not cheap or that affordable for me to rent on my own with my family...

Ideally we would all get a bigger place together, but it doesn't seem like that's in the cards for us - though I may look into that idea further.

What does 64 unchanging in this situation suggest to others. I'm currently reading unchanging threads for ideas.

64 and 63 both feature alternating yin-yang lines. In 63 the male lines are in their proper places (1,3,5) and so therefore also the female, but in 64 they are all in the wrong place indicating that to find equilibrium a certain amount of shuffling around is in order.

It also might be interpreted as an indication that the male female dynamic right now is out of wack so a move of some sort is definitely in order. That said, given the out of wack ground, a clear path may be hard to determine or execute - hence the fox's tail warning viz making a crossing.

You are contemplating a crossing of sorts - a pretty major one seemingly involving not only ending a relationship but also doing what AA people call a 'geographical,' in other words trying to change yourself by changing your external surroundings. Is there any guidance in 64 for this?

In terms of the trigrams you have Water as inner and Fire as outer. Water is the trigram of finding your level, perseverence, endurance, patience but also inner core, having the kidney to see things through and reach some sort of fundamentally sane and real connection with heart. Fire is the trigram of radiance, interconnections (because of fire's dependence on fuel), also protection in that the outside is highly dynamic, even dangerous, whereas the inside is soft and still, relatively speaking, so sometimes the images connected with Fire involve things like shells and armor, some sort of protection principle. There is a two-way aspect to fire in, for example, how fire both radiates out and makes connections and interdependencies, warmth, heart relations and so on whilst also serving to repel borders. One should not plunge into new intimacies, for example, before proper connection has been established at arm's length such as transpires in more traditional courting contexts without which the burning fire of passionate romance can create an undue emphasis on that which only blazes addictively for a short time whilst fuel supplies last versus connecting on a slower, deeper level first.

So on the inside the hexagram indicates going in a slow, determined steady fashion to achieve your aim by remaining true to your inner core. This approach has less to do with reading the trail for signs and messages as one might do with Wind and more to do with being true to oneself, fundamentally sincere. (More guidance for water is found in Hexagram 29.) On the outside the hexagram indicates protection as well as connection, insight, warmth, passion and so on. (More guidance on Fire is found in Hexagram 30.)

The hexagram is unbalanced, perhaps indicating that your situation and course are set so that's a given. It's done. It's over. You are where you are which is in an unbalanced difficult situation but knowing that you can now proceed forward by holding true to yourself on the deepest, heartfelt level whilst also making proper connections with favorable situations and people without carelessly letting your guard down.

(Of course, this is just one individual's take based on what little you wrote above. If it resonates, great; if not, ignore entirely!)

but in 64 they are all in the wrong place ...

To make any of the lines be 'correct' or 'wrong' is only one method of using the Yi - but I think it is important to remember it is not the only way, nor is it the only 'correct' way to interpret this - or any other - hexagram.

This becomes more evident when we look at the line statements of 64: if all the lines were 'wrong' then we'd expect to find all of the changing line statements to be right, or positive - and this is not the case.

When you say to rent on your own with your family, I assume you mean your children?

The characters for 64 mean 'not yet across', or 'no help'. All the lines in 64 are in their wrong positions, so as things stand, everything is out of place. And because you got it unchanging, things will continue to be out of place.

The Judgement says, 'if the little fox, after nearly completing the crossing, gets his tail in the water, there is nothing that would further' (Wilhelm translation). Perhaps you're not really decided in you to do that, and perhaps you would back-track and therefore not succeed.

Tuck Chang says something very interesting about 64: it is 'seen as an embarrassment of the male, as all the masculine lines lose their positions, therefore the masculine momentum resumes seeking its right position', but the female lines are also seeking their right positions. He also says that 64 'connotes failure'.

My conclusion is that, as things stand, you won't succeed in whatever it is that you want to succeed in. My suggestion would be to have a look within you, to solidify your goals and come up with practical plans to achieve those goals - then ask again if your concrete plans will succeed.

find my own place again ... would be for the best/ work out and I received 64 unchanging - Not yet across

Another title or 'handle' for 64 is 'Not Yet Complete' which conveys for me more of a sense of 'unfinished business'.

The Image text for 64 reads, in part, 'The flame is positioned on top of the water / Not yet complete / The noble young one, accordingly, is heedful and discerning'.

And so adding to this sense of 'unfinished business' is the sense of needing to pay attention - to be mindful - in how you bring closure to your particular situation.

Looking at the hexagram's text, you have:
"Not Yet Complete / Fulfillment / The little fox is almost across the half-frozen stream / To soak that tail / Is not a direction with merit".

Taken altogether, I get the sense that this is more about 'how' and 'when' (and perhaps 'why') and not (just) about 'if'. If it were me, I might ask myself, why am I doing this? And what's the best or most auspicious way to achieve my goal - to finish my 'crossing'. Is it possible I'm trying to 'high-tail' it out of my situation, and in my rush to leave, I find myself - metaphorically speaking - crossing a half-frozen river and I've unmindfully gotten my tail soaked?

Another way of interpreting this hexagram is via the trigrams (3-line figures): here you have trigram Flame, which I think can represent warmth, clarity, working/being with others (as flame is with fuel and air), and a place of feeling/being protected. Trigram water can be about seeking or following a deeper path (or river) or meaning, or being singularly focused or directed. From this perspective, these are decidedly different paths or Dao - and each seems potentially useful.

But given the prior advice about being mindful, and the imagery here of half-frozen rivers and soaked tails, I would ask myself more about my motivations for leaving, my 'why am I doing this?' Am I perhaps acting out of some fear, or grief, or sadness (or even depression) - and will how I complete this journey help me heal, or simply create more of a gap or void in me?

That may not entirety 'answer' your question, but I hopoe it is still of some use to you.

Kindly, D.

What you have written does resonate for me - things are out of balance relationship wise I believe.

Given I have a medical diagnosis of bipolar - I think of this disorder in a spiritual internal/external sense for myself.

Therefore, I started a fast on 1st November which is/ was due to end today - I broke the fast a few days early - and part of that included not being intimate with my partner... Initially he accepted what I was doing and backed off but earlier this week he/ I gave in.

(I will update my other thread as this cast relates to that).

Other readings in the past have suggested to me that I don't move away to hastily, that I should stay and work things out with him or that there isn't really much I can do to stop/ pause our relationship.

As a bit more background before I go update other thread - I attempted the fast to show me where I want to be and who I want to be with...

I will respond also to Diamant - but yes when I say my family - I am referring to my children... It would be too complicated to explain why we live apart - but work and cost of living are the main ones.

A colleague of mine tested positive for Covid yesterday, so I am in self isolation until two tests come back negative.

My partner went away for the weekend before I knew and the rules here in our country is that he as a double vaccinated non primary close contact of my colleague doesn't have to self isolate... I thought he should have returned, but he didn't - so that did impact on my decision to seek other living arrangements.

He is a water sign and I'm a fire sign.

Thank you for your insight into the reading and advice.

Things were going very well before I broke my fast. I was promoted at work, and a day or so after breaking fast too early - put into self isolation.

I will do some more inner contemplating before doing anything rash as I have done in the past.

I resonate with being the fox and a wild, fiery one at that sometimes.

Taken altogether, I get the sense that this is more about 'how' and 'when' (and perhaps 'why') and not (just) about 'if'.

Thank you for what you wrote in full, it all makes sense to me.

From your quote above I asked for insight about when/how to stay or move on and received 15 unchanging - integrity.

Therefore, as some responders have suggested to me - I interpret hex 15 in this way, to regain balance in my life and with others... I need to humbly accept and stay grateful for where I am currently living (with him). Regardless of our differences, I ought to be clear on my core values and not lose myself in or with him.
Part of me wants to be affectionate ( my heart) whereas my mind I believe does not (for a time).

So I do wonder if it is possible to show him gratitude for his kindness, allowing me into his personal space, without touchy feely affection on my behalf - whether this living situation/ our relationship will go on if we go back to living apart.

It's good that you've found some sense of resolution here.

Without knowing you and your situation much, much better - perhaps meaning we'd have to at least have a long heart-to-heart over a few beers or cups of tea - I more broadly think of Integrity as applying to all that we do, regardless if we stay, go, cross the river, cross it only half way, get our tail wet ....

And my belief (and it's only a belief at this point) is that with Integrity we gain discernment - and the ability to make better choices, which are still subject to life's ups and downs and 'sufferings' and disappointments.

Best, D

I totally agree that integrity is important in every/ all situations, in everything we say and / or do ...
