Hello all,

It’s been a while since I’ve been active with this site, but I’m wondering if anyone can add any insight to a recent reading of mine.

Some backstory: I’m a freelancer who has been able to make ends meet and juggle life as a mother with part-time piecework over the past half-decade or so. However, with the current state of the economy, I’ve taken a big hit this year. I’ve considered trying to find a full-time job with a company somewhere to make my family’s financial situation more stable, but I’m a bit ambivalent about it. I.e., I’m craving the security that comes with such a job, but I’m also reluctant to give up the flexibility and autonomy of working freelance.

At any rate, a few months ago I took the plunge and applied for a job that I (thought I) was perfectly suited for. Basically, it’s exactly what I did in my last position before I gave up full-time work to be a stay-at-home mom. The application sat in limbo for months, and I finally logged onto the recruitment website to discover that my resume was essentially tossed into the wastebasket, without any notification from the company. On one hand, my ego was a little bruised. (I know it’s just one application, and typically people put in tons of applications only to hear back from one or two, but I was kinda thinking I’d at least get an interview.) However, on the other hand, I’m a bit relieved that this particular road has closed itself off to me, because deep down I don’t want to go back to the corporate grind.

Reflecting on how ambivalent I feel about this and why, while still considering that I have to make /some/ move to find better financial footing, I asked the iChing about my next step moving forward: “What should I do about finding work?

The answer was Hex 38.3,4,5 to Hex 9.

My take on this is that I’m facing a lot of obstacles (38) to finding work now—freelance or full-time—but I’m currently in a state or Hex 9, where something promising is on the horizon and I just have to wait for the rain to come. (Some interpretations also render this hex as a time of rest or finding humility, so that might simply mean I’m digesting my application rejection and need to learn from it.) But the real confusion for me comes in the lines.

Line3:
In the third line, magnetic, we see one whose carriage is dragged back, while the oxen in it are pushed back, and she is herself subjected to the shaving of her head and the cutting off of her nose. There is no good beginning, but there will be a good end. (Legge)

I think this is talking about my rejected resume and the slap to the ego it gave me, but is telling me not to lose hope despite setbacks.

Line 4:
The fourth line, dynamic, shows its subject solitary amidst the prevailing disunion. But he meets with the good man represented by the first line, and they blend their sincere desires together. The position is one of peril, but there will be no mistake. (Legge)

Ok, here is where the “outside party” references come in. Is this a reference to someone I should be contacting? Like someone in my professional network? Is there a possibility of collaboration here? And what’s the “peril”?

Line 5:
The fifth line, magnetic, shows that to its subject occasion for repentance will disappear. With her relative and minister she unites closely and readily as if she were biting through a piece of skin. When she goes forward with this help, what error can there be? (Legge)

Another reference to an outside party, and I get more confused with this line because some translations refer to this person as “head of the clan” or “relative/ancestor,” yet others as an “ally.” Either way, it seems like someone else helping me to clear the way through the “obstacle(s).” Am I supposed to wait for someone else to make me an offer, or is this again a networking thing? Or am I completely off here and this isn’t a third party at all, but some part of myself that I need to rally to the surface?

Anyway, I’m totally confused on what kind of action I’m supposed to be taking, or if I should wait and see if something promising pops up on the radar. Any thoughts?

Maybe it could be both? Maybe rallying yourself will produce a third party.

38 is usually about something that, as Hilary often puts it, seems like an alien. 9 could be about your insecurity as a small farmer / freelancer. That seems like an accurate frame, doesn't it? You're deeply ambivalent about losing your autonomy, but it seems necessary.

I think it's important to note that every line has a component of bad things ending up okay. 38.3: "With no beginning, there is an end." The horrible visions are (or can be) only visions, not real. 38.4: danger, but also "truth and confidence" and "no mistake." 38.5: "Regrets vanish," and going on is not wrong.

Liselle, thank you very much for pointing this out. You’re very right that these three lines in particular note that things will turn out OK, and that gives me hope. I just wish I understood exactly what it is that the oracle is telling me I need to do in terms of action on my own behalf! Perhaps you’re right, and I need to set things in motion before anything will manifest…

Maybe do anything you can think of? (I mean, ugh...but then remind yourself of the encouraging lines.)

Or you could ask Yi about specific things. Good you started with an overall question, though; I think you got a really helpful reading.

Update:
Since this initial post, I continued to search and apply to jobs but to no avail. However, I was suddenly approached by someone I’ve known for a long time about an urgent need to fill a position, and he basically handed me a job.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How would you interpret 9 in this reading?

How would you interpret 9 in this reading?
Edit (sorry, my post got cut off up somehow, and when I tried to edit it it just came up as a quote of my previous post)

I think given the context, Hex 9 was telling me “eventually, but not yet.” Seeing as how I cast this nearly a year ago and it took nearly 11 months for something to “come to harvest,” that’s my guess. Oh, and something did figuratively “fall out of the sky.

Basically, looking back on everything, here’s how it played out:
I’m middle aged and had been out of the full-time work thing so long that my resume just wasn’t attractive enough to sell me as a good candidate for what I was applying for. I needed to swallow my pride and be open to help… I think the oracle was telling me to look to someone who knows me beyond what I can write on one piece of paper with a cover letter attached. I was basically banging my head against a wall by applying to random companies, but perhaps I needed that obstacle in order to become open to something else. I had to wait for an opportunity to present itself, but eventually someone in my network who has known me for decades tapped me for a job. It’s totally different from what I did before, but I like the environment and the new challenges it brings. Indeed, I’m glad I jumped on it. Had he asked me last year I probably would have said no.

9 Little Accumulation could be seen in the context of this reading as giving time for you to clean up your act as a perspective employee or for circumstances to become more favourable.

38.3 - Your cart is pulled back and your cattle hobbled. The outcome is not favourable for progress especially if you cut off your nose to spite your face in this situation. (doubt and delay)
38.4 -If you can manage it, cutting ties with your old needs of the past is not a mistake. If you can manage it. (doubt and delay)
38.5 - Bingo!! Sorrows and regrets disappear - the going becomes easier - as past behaviours lose some of their voting power, A new group of healthier bedfellows start to hold sway.

Thank you for your interpretation, my_key. I’m not sure if you noticed, however, but this is an old thread and I just reopened it to give an update on how it played out.

I was aware it was an old post. There may well have been some value for you in reading these words in retrospect.
Good Luck

Yes, even though it’s an old post I got value from my-key‘s analysis of 38. Also it now occurs to me that the image for 9 of the superior man improving his outward appearance fits with the need to upgrade the resume.
Thanks for the letting us know how it played out, A!
