Good morning from Montreal (Canada)....

Last night, my best Friend died of a very sudden death... She was my buddy, a true kindred spirit and a pillar in my life. I will miss her terribly. In going over the events and circumstances leading to her life, I noticed many synchronicities and symbols with the most prevalent being the number 11... She died on January 11, 2011, she and I would have celebrated 11 years of frienship this week, my own birthday falls on an 11 (may).. I figured her death had a certain significance to me other than the obvious fact that I lost someone very close to me. I asked the iching what Marlène's death meant in the general context of my life... I got 11.5.6 transforming into 15... by the way, I find it interesting that hex 11.5.6 contains the number 11 not only once but twice if you add up 5 and 6... Can anyone help me understand this reading as my exhaustion prevents me from deriving any clear understanding on my part for the moment...

Thank you...

Thanks for your message, truth is I find it a hard question to answer.

Because I found it hard to grasp I thought of those close to me I have lost suddenly and how it was significant in my life. My first thought then was that I understood all that happens is you remain friends, just as you always have been only in a new kind of a way. It was this understanding, that came in a gradual but very tangible kind of a way that I probably wouldn't have known if those who were close had not died. I think there will be times your friend is still close to you and you will sense it. I feel while you sustain a loss of the persons physical prescence you sort of gain from their spiritual presence. In spirit they have a wider perspective and sometimes come forward to assist you or just be with you a moment.

Right now though you must be in great shock and sadness and I am sorry for that .

As for the reading I'm not really sure what to make of it. 11.5.6 does not change to 15 BTW it changes to hex 9

Hex 9 suggests sort of being stuck in limbo a while whilst 11 is the 'flow'....11.5 and 11.6 only make me think there really is no seperation between you, at least not of what is the most essentially important thing, your bond with each other. Probably right now there there may be some sort of sense of waiting. I'm thinking maybe its a bit too soon to get a clear answer to your question, rather just allow yourself some time to release. 11.5 may point to your continued bond in spirit and 11.6 asks you not to try to build barriers around this...if you are feeling tense and rigid and like 'this shouldn't have happened' try to let that go a bit. 11.6 says theres nothing to defend here, nothing to fight with and I don't know enough about the situation to apply it, but emotionally for you I think perhaps it may help to let go a bit...try not to tense up too much.

I have looked at the reading as if it talking to you as you are now rather than answering the question you asked... I think perhaps the 11 is saying the answer to your question will come in its own time (and hex 9 suggests not immediately) and it will come in an enriching way (11.5) but also allow yourself to let go of any worries or defensive feelings about her death (11.6)

hi,

so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved...

i was drawn to write to you, though I am still learning myself. I immediately thought of this when I reviewed the Hexagrams...PEACE. It is like a double message. For the peace your friend is experiencing and for the peace the Yi is attempting to offer you through its choice in this hexagram.

In Wilhelm-Baynes' translation:

This hexagram denotes a time in nature when heaven seems to be on earth. Heaven has placed itself beneath the earth, and so their powers unite in deep harmony. then peace and blessing descend upon all living things.

Isn't the truth about death? It is when Heaven meets the Earth.

When I read changing line 6, I thought of how we also return to the earth. "The wall of the town sinks back into the moat from which it was dug" (Wilhelm). In other words, we go back from whence we came.

"We should submit to fate and not try to stave it off by violent resistance." (Wilhelm) Accept the natural course of life.

And thus our "one recourse left [to] us is to hold our own within our intimate circle." (Wilhelm) We have only one option remaining to us...to keep them in our hearts."

And line 5 tells of your connection...like a marriage of sorts with the dance between alternating roles... teacher and student, leader and follower, higher and lower.

And again, Yi, I think gives a double intention in Hexagram 9...

First,

"The wind can indeed drive the clouds together in the sky; yet, being nothing but air, without solid body, it does not produce great or lasting effects. So also an individual, in times when he can produce no great effect in the outer world, can do nothing except refine the expression of his nature in small ways." (Wilhelm)

Such is life...we cannot change the ultimate truth of the cycle of life...and we are but changing forms...

But again, I feel that sense of peace and almost melancholy from these words of Wilhelms...All of nature changes its form as water changes from ice to liquid to air...so do we from dust to dust.

Second,

I also have the feeling that Yi is pointing to your inevitable changeability of emotions you are likely to experience in the days ahead, but again, Yi is pointing to hope and comforting you as it were to say all life is nature...and nature lives and dies to live again...

God bless...take care,
modestlearner

This hexagram belongs to the first month (February-March), at which time the forces of nature prepare the new spring.

Thank you both for your insight... I have drawn great comfort from reading your interpretations and they have also helped me understand some of the emotions that were hidding in subconscious. My friend died before I had a chance to see her (last time I saw her was at the beginning of Decembre). I guess I am feeling guilty for not having taken the time to go see her. I'm happy though that we had a chance to have a very fun conversation on Monday. She was asking me for interpretation advice on a dream that she had had the night before in which she was sitting on a beach, on a beautiful sunny day. A gorgeous naked man walked in front of her and invited her for a walk. She didn't feel she deserved to be asked for a walk by such a handsome man but felt compelled to following him... At the time, I made fun of her and said that the dream meant that she was craving "company" (that's the kink of humour she and I shared)... Looking back, I now realize the dream meant something else..

Anyhow, my friend is gone now but I certainly feel peaceful. She was a great inspiration, a model and the greatest friend I ever had. I will miss her terribly...

Eleven is the number of friendship in that the eleventh sign of the zodiac is Aquarius, the sign of friendship. Eleven is the atomic number of sodium. When a friend cries, you taste salt. The maple leaf on Canada's flag has 11 points.

Hi dolcevita,

"What Marlène's death means in the general context of my life?"

11 – says that everything is well, everything is perfect the way it is – life and death having their own mysterious balance.

11.5 Her death changes the feeling of who you are and your placement on the checkerboard of life. You'll have to discover a new balance and a renewed feeling of yourself.

11.6 Don't resist change.

9 – This indicates a transition period where you'll be busy laying new foundation to your relationship with life and death.

Just the other day I was hearing Abraham-Hicks saying: “One thing has to be clear: there is no Life and Death – there is Life and Life." I like this a lot and hope it helps give a new perspective.

Cheers.
Emiliana

thank you for your insight into the reading I receive regarding my friend... Having a bit more perspective as a few days has gone by since she died, I now instinctively understand the reading a bit more. This understanding mirrors the comments that I have received thus far from Trojan and you... I get an overall sense of appeasement, trust and peace from the reading I received... I have used the iching quite a bit over the last couple months and the one I received regarding my friend is, by far, the one that I feel came from outside forces (as opposed to from my subconscious as I have tended to notice...).
