I like my friend but he has a gf
I write songs about him and i think he knows something but i'm not sure. So i asked the iching.

Line 4 Voluntary retreat good for spirit not the ego = retire.

My interpretation: He knows It but he decided not to do anything about It because he has a girlfriend (53)

I agree 33.4 does read as if to say he is aware of your affection. I can also see 33.4 > 53 as the I Ching advising you not to put anymore energy into this, pull back and 53. Progress in another direction.

Funny enough, I'm in the same situation as you and I received 33 (as second hex!).

So, as Rosada commented on my post, 33 is not just stepping back, but just stop going on, stop going forward. Could it be he knows it and for your and his gf's sake he "retreats"?
The line says this is a voluntary thing of him. He has not to violate his convictions. Pretty ethical aspect. You'll find something suitable, I'm sure!

Yes! I think the same. I think its very ethical of him to respect his girlfriend and i'm sure if it's meant to be between us, It will be when his relationship with his girlfriend ends (if It does)
We have to continue with our lives!
