I asked the I Ching whether I should buy a new house which I recently saw. I received in reply 24 with 6 on line 3 (turning to "Brilliance injured"). The reading of Legge (an the one by Wilhelm is similar) is that "The third SIX, divided, shows one who has made repeated returns. The position is perilous, but there will be no error". I have made some attempts to move in the recent past but this reading is not clear to me. Does it mean that the right thing for me is to buy a new house now or is it the other way round?

While 24 is auspicious, 3 gives many obstacles and a difficult beginning. However, all new beginnings are difficult, and so 3 is a good hexagram and the actual true beginning of the sequence of hexagrams. So, the return to this house and its purchase is very good, but it will mark a difficult new start in your life.

Just to clarify this is 24.3 > 36, yes?

If you were to buy the new house you might feel its risky but it would be no mistake. What are the risks involved in buying the house? Are you feeling anxious about it, if so why?

In terms of buying a house it also makes me think that maybe you have a sense of urgency to buy, which sometimes causes people to pay more then they need to, and brighteness hiding , in this context, makes me think of keeping your financial 'cards' close to your chest in terms of how much you offer. Hopefully its not an auction because then you will certainly be tempted to get caught up in the sense of urgency, but again the omen is 'without fault'. The advice taken from image of relating hex (36) and line 24.3 and the oracle of 24 is to remain constant through the danger without haste. Perhaps set yourself a top price and dont exceed that... or something like that

looking at the fan yao
Hasty steadfastness not possible

is also revealing, perhaps as where you are coming from or simply a why to the advice of 24.3.

:)

I think all this shows is how you keep reversing decisions or changing direction. Generally its someone trying to make progress and they keep getting distracted or failing but then they pick themselves up and try again perhaps a little the wiser

I'm not sureif there is a comment on if its right to buy the house or not....I think it has thrown you back to your own decision and maybe there really is no right or wrong to buying this house its your choice, Yi is just showing you changing your mind, to date not quite reaching your goal. Its reassuring in a way since despite reversals you manage to make progress. The answer may be much more addressing your whole frame of mind around buying houses than the actual house in question. It could be you need to try to be a little firmer in your decisions but don't lose heart that till now this goal has not been reached

This is the classic line of trying to give up smoking lol...so how is the project of buying a house a little like mustering the resolve to give up smoking ?

In 24.3 I think the idea is one is trying to return to the 'right' way for oneself and one keeps going off track but still one has to be patient with oneself.

Many thanks for your inputs - I think you are right. There is definitely some wavering on my part but the house is good value for money - although quite expensive. So if I bought it I wouldn't lose any money, quite the contrary, the investment would pay off over the next years (by the way, it's not an auction). So the hexagram appears to reflect quite accurately both my frame of mind and the actual state of affairs. The I Ching never cease to surprise me!
