Hello,

I am new to iclarity - although I have been reading its articles for awhile and using iching divination for a little over two years, I am excited that such a community exists.

My question was: Advice for the rest of the week?

My answer: Hexagram 42 "Increase" changing lines 3 & 6 changing to Hexagram 63 "Completion"

Now the freaky part about this is I did a reading on Sunday and got 42.6 changing to 3 "Difficulty". Obviously the iching is trying to reiterate a point me. That my selfishness is allowing people to attack me, therefore there will be evil. Basically I am heading for more difficulties down the road because im a selfish bastard, I can admit some of this is true but I have also done alot of work on myself and have tapped into my ability to be caring and compassionate on many fronts, but I still have a tendency to allow the difficulties in my life to consume myself and my relationships, not a healthy habit but im working on it. I mean I have had a pretty tough time in the last couple of years with spiritual and physical stuff manifesting out of nowhere, its been bad but I can also admit there has been alot of good that has come from it. So to have the iching drop a hot load on me right now is, well a little inconvenient - but I get it, this is life.

My question is the changing lines, there are so many schools of thought on this I tend to gravitate toward Alfred Huang's method because of how old it is but thats really just grasping at straws, I am wondering if the addition of the third line on my second reading is pointing to an evolution in events. The iching states things so matter of factually it's hard to know sometimes what it is actually saying when multiple changing lines are present and in this sense I feel a bit like it might be contradictory. Any insights or perspectives from my fellow community members would be much appreciated especially if they have had experience with these particular lines and/or hexagram. Thank you in advance.

Well, 42.3 says you benefit from someone else's misfortune. I always think of dentists when I get this line.

The top line says you benefit nobody; you don't hold your heart steady. I have recently got this line myself. It was my daily reading on a day when I was into complaining a lot about my husband. Apparently Yi doesn't think much of having mixed feelings about someone or something we're supposed to be committed to. There is also a line in hexagram 32 about not holding the heart steady or vacillating in our ability to be virtuous: 32.3. When I first got 42.6, I felt it was a real slap from the I Ching, but these days I tend to think it is not so much a condemnation of my character as a warning that perhaps out of confusion [hex 3] I am about to indulge in some sort of unfortunate behavior.

The two lines are referring to two different things, I think. That is, the top line is not saying that your behavior in line 3 is to be condemned. "Use of unfortunate events for enhancement is something that has always existed." -- Cleary.

Please get back to us and let us know what happened.

Hey Ginnie,

thank you for the response! Yeah totally a slap in the face :) It's amazing how this particular hexagram which bodes such a positive general message can go so negative so quickly.

"Well, 42.3 says you benefit from someone else's misfortune. I always think of dentists when I get this line."
Ha, that made me laugh, perfect analogy.

I totally agree that through adversity we acquire strength of character, i will certainly check in with what happens....cant wait...uggh.
