Hi Everyone (reading this),

I have decided to finally write after many years of reading on Clarity and gathering insights through others’ contributions.
My main motivation is to show a gratitude for Yi, this community, and perhaps unveil something about this hexagram outcome.

I have recently applied for 2 positions from the same employer - same role but different projects. The turnaround from application to invitation for the interview to the interview(s) itself has been swift. So much so that I was swept away thinking that it must be a done deal (the position/role is specialised, so either they won’t bother or will get through to the prospective employee quickly).

In a lead-up to my interview, I wanted to add some pulse as I was uncharacteristically composed and unpertrubed, so I asked Yi: “what is it that I should bring into this interview (as in attitude)?” I am pretty sure that I received 58 Unchanged, however, I can’t remember firmly. The interpretation, hexagram description, and image seemed to suggest something positive but undefined, flailing, and somewhat indefnite -- that was my impression. In truth, it mirrored a lot of my own state except that it’s one of those that are more difficult to rationalise and verbalise. So, Yi was helpful to bring it to the surface, and a spot on, I think.

After the pleasant and all-around informative interview I felt uplifted, except for when I was just about to leave. As I was leaving the “performance” behind and started to gather myself and retract -- summing everything up in a split second-- the actual impression was that I am truly leaving this team behind. This was also reflected in my exit salutation. Nevertheless, that reaction was brief and overall unsubstantiated and I continued to feel positive about it; more so because I now wanted the job more after meeting the potential co-workers. Possibly also because I have opened up about who I am to a group of people that I could come across again in the future. I am not sure...

Anyway, I asked Yi: “what is the likely outcome of this meeting?” I received 45.5 to 16!

A day later one of the panelists called me to inform me that someone else was chosen for both positions as they had more experience in the area. However, they were "impressed by my enthusiasm" and they had an interesting time due to my discussion/interest (about an emerging area, still largely unexamined, unknown and often less trusted (less objective lens)).

Hilary says about this hexagram line, 45.5:

"'Gathering, there is a position – no mistake.
No trust at all.
From the source, ever-flowing constancy – regrets vanish
.’"

Also, of a hexagram pair with 46:
"Gathering forms a pair with Hexagram 46, Pushing Upward:
'Gathering means assembling, Pushing Upward means not coming back.’”

Finally, the relating hexagram is 16 - Enthusiasm (in Hilary’s description):

"The Chinese word for 'enthusiasm' contains an elephant – a character that also means 'image'. The elephant is magnificent, strong, a source of delight – and also unpredictable and potentially dangerous. Imagination and anticipation move us with ease; with them, we can be motivated and inspired – or we can be carried away by the power of our own story.” Hm.. :)

But, also:

"Enthusiasm follows from Hexagram 15, Integrity:
'One who possesses greatness and is also capable of Integrity is naturally Enthusiastic.’

Though this is a reading in retrospect, I am happy to receive any comments. I am fascinated by this very eloquent response on Yi’s part, which is why I shared it.

Also, I am interested in the hexagram pairing comments, and in the example of 15 & 16, 15 seems to embue 16 with the gift of integrity that when moderated with greatness becomes visible through enthusiasm... does that make sense?

Thank you all!

Great Works through Riding the Elephant

45 Image translation by Alfred Huang
By observing how all beings are brought together,
One can see the truth of Heaven and Earth and all beings
Kind of sums it all up as a retrospective.

The 15/16 pair perhaps holds a dynamic tension of Authenticity (15) and Delight (16). The fine balance between being carefree and careless.

That’s a beautiful and clean connection. And vivid. Thank you!

I am positive that I am still working to consilidate the flow between what was internally and authentically present, to its expression in meeting with the experience, to what the I Ching suggests/progresses about these directions.

With regards to the latter, I am grateful to your contribution on 45 Image translation by Alfred Huang. It helps me to recognise that this is how I wanted to be present (and indeed what I think is a priority over gaining employment), but could not uphold the awareness. I was distracted or misdirected by something…still working on this.

Maybe the key is this line that you describe between 15 & 16. I am trying to feel the correct tension.

I think I see it — right there in the sentence — ‘how I wanted to be present’ vs ‘gaining employment’. But it needs more fine tuning.
