do you remember the guy I was dating? well i decided to give up the knowledge. in all this time no feeling had developed. so I asked: was I right to leave him? 62 unchanging. looking at the shared experiences it sounds like a "no" but why would iching tell me no if i'm happier to have quit?

Hi diidii,
I wonder why you asked this question. If the answer really is NO, does that mean you go back to him? Even if you feel happier now that you have quit?

You asked a yes/no question and these are normally a bit more difficult to understand, because the Yi does not give a 'yes' or 'no' as an answer, but images.
Why not ask the Yi for example a commentary about the fact that you ended the relation with that guy?

Hope this helps

Hello,

In response to "was I right to leave him? 62 unchanging":

Hexagram 62 points to success only in small affairs - and I think this is likely referring to the success in the small affair of saying No to this person. Legge's commentary suggests that the bird imagery of hexagram 62 reminds us that sometimes it is better to descend than to take flight. You said "no feeling had developed" - seems like the relationship did not take flight, and that is for the best. I think the 'no' you are perceiving is actually a confirmation 'no' to the relationship moving forward. The lines seem to echo the decision you made.

Here are some very, very loose thoughts about the lines....
  1. In line one the bird ascends and meets with evil/misfortune/pitfall. Don't aim too high for what is out of reach.
  2. In line two the subject does not force her position or get ahead of herself.
  3. Line 3 encourages to take precautions and not to overlook minor details; follow your intuition, or you might come to harm. Recognize that the situation is unfavorable.
  4. Line 4 implies if you keep going there will be problems.
  5. Line 5 - The clouds are dense but it doesn't rain. (Seemed to be potential for a relationship but the potential did not produce anything). A ruler could set things in order, but needs help. (You know the answer, but need help to understand).
  6. Line 6 - the bird imagery again- if you fly too far off you will get hurt.
Willem D wondered why you asked the question...seems like the answer is in Line 5 - Perhaps you just a need a little confirmation. Willem D commented that the Yi does not give Yes/No answers, but imagery - The imagery of the bird not flying too high seems to imply that same of the relationship. Also, Willem D suggested "Why not ask the Yi for example a commentary about the fact that you ended the relation with that guy?" - The lines seem to be that commentary. Again, back to Legge's commentary, sometimes it's better to descend than ascend.

you are absolutely right when you write that I needed confirmation. I have been very sad these days. but this morning I woke up and thought I did the right thing because as you described the lines this little bird was flying like icarus, too close to the sun and I was burning. I thank you for your time, with love
