How do we feel generally about that combination of moving lines which changes a hexagram into the next hexagram in the sequence? Is this generally a good omen?

E.g.

4.1.3.5.6 > 5
58.1.4.6 > 59

Is there any special significance to this kind of cast? Is this Yi saying "yes -- this will advance you to the exact next step"?

Hmm. This sounds like the kind of thing that would be right down Stephen Karcher's alley. I've got no idea how you could see it, except that it does seem like a case where you should look very closely at the relating hexagram and the zhi gua for each line and the thingummy jigs, the corresponding lines in each of the zhi gua. I look forward to hearing what others have to say about this.

Agreed that this always felt important when I get this type of casting but couldn’t parse what exactly the significance was. Maybe it’s pointing to a chronology or cause and effect idea.

What a good question!
My initial inclinations tend towards there being a 'compactness', a 'close-to-homeness', even an 'in-your-face' quality to be seen in these consultations. The situation being explored does not need to be opened up into wild imaginings; there is a 'one-stop shop' ness around how to respond to / interpret the divination.

There may be two ways of looking at this too depending on whether the sequencing keeps within the hexagram pair (3 to 4; 21 to 22; 59 to 60 etc) or whether it moves into the next hexagram pair (4 to 5; 22 to 23; 60 to 61 etc). Within pair may offer interpretation guidance towards taking more of an introspective perspective - stay within this bubble - while between pair may indeed point towards an element of next step or small local expansion in some way.

Making something up without looking at any examples, perhaps the relating hexagram might feel particularly like something pulling you forward - especially aspirational/ directional.

How many places are there where it's just a one-line change? (Asking because simpler is easier to think about.) All I can think of off the top of my head is 52.5 to 53, where the tree takes root in the mountain.

'Stilling your jaws,
Words have order,
Regrets vanish.'

Does that feel like a next step - is there a marked 'tug' towards 53? Maybe. Not sure...

Might be interesting to compare the connecting lines to the Sequence text, the Xugua, and as Irfan said, the Zagua (Pair text) when relevant.

For instance, the Xugua for 52-53 is "Things cannot end with standstill, and so Gradual Progress follows. Gradual Progress means advancing." (Hilary)
vs. 52.5
'Stilling your jaws,
Words have order,
Regrets vanish.'

and 53.5
'Wild geese gradually progress to the ancestral grave-mounds.
The wife is not pregnant for three years.
In the end, nothing can prevent it.
Good fortune.'

Of course since the Xugua often leaves a person feeling blank, Hilary's thoughts on why it says what it does might help:
The unshakeable independence of Stilling is not an end in itself; it allows no space for growth or development, and growth cannot be stopped forever.

Gradual Progress needs its foundation in stillness: the growing tree is rooted in the mountain; the patience to sustain a growing relationship comes from self-sufficiency.

I can see that pretty literally in 53.5: spend some time "stilling" (not pregnant, not progressing), then nothing can prevent it, and now maybe you're better prepared (52.5, there's more order?).

52.5 reminds me a little of 27's Image:
'Below the mountain is thunder: Nourishment.
A noble one reflects on his words in conversation,
And is discriminating about what he eats and drinks.'

But 27 isn't structurally related to 52 or 53 as far as I can tell from this grand website that calculates every relationship under the sun (I think).

The only easily-accessible 52.5 to 53 reading I have, without any other lines, is from a day when I was apparently frantic about three separate "crises" at once, and got this reading when I wailed about one of them, "You don't understand that I have no idea what you're saying!" (Clearly I could've used some stilling, root-growing, and patience with my Yi relationship. :paperbag: )

One of the problems was solved a few weeks later, the second one probably within a day or two, the third is still hanging fire but has lost urgency.

What makes it especially sequential, I'm not sure. I can see how a message might've been, "Settle down, it'll resolve in due time, but it'll take the time it takes" or something.

It might be interesting to trace the path from one hexagram to the next as defined by the lines and try to make up stories to go with them.

I’m looking at 14. - 15. and remembering the lyric “Surfing is the only life, the only life for me!”and getting a visual of an Abundant wave and a tiny (Modest) surfer. The lines can be read as describing what creates the surfer’s life:
14.1 not needing a lot of stuff.
14.2 just a surf board.
14.4 no envy of any other life.
14.6 happiness forever.
15. The Surfer
