Outcome of Jury Trial

I have been going through some legal difficulties for a while and have been consulting the Yi just about every step. I had been hoping to avoid a Jury trial, but the DA's office seems to think that they have offered my a good deal (Pretrial diversion). I didn't outright reject the offer, but I think, after having tried to file a motion to quash the indictment and filing subpoenas for witnesses, the DA's office is becoming less willing to negotiate. With trial imminent, I decided to ask the Yi: What will be the outcome if I go to Trial?

I got Hexagram 54.1>40. I'm not sure how to take 54. The changing line seems to show that "Undertakings bring good fortune," but what is that undertaking is supposed to be? Going to trial? What seems certain is that I need to adapt to my role in the situation, but I don't know how.

I feel like I have a much stronger grip on the meaning of Hexagram 40 in this situation. The Judgment would seem to indicate that if I have something to do, like go to trial, I just need to go ahead and do it. The image seems too obvious: "...the superior man pardons mistakes / And forgives misdeeds." It is very easy to read the general answer as positive. So, if anyone can offer alternative positions, then I would be very happy to read them.

Also, there are more details about this problem for me in other parts of the forum. I broke this off so that people would be encouraged to comment. The mountain of text at the link below is pretty daunting.

Things may not go smoothly, but the outcome is rather good for you, especially if you find a powerful and/or wise ally. It is best to act moderately and tactful, even if you do not feel this way, for this line signifies submissive position.
Compromise of a sort is possible.

Your reply really resonated with me. Thus far, things have gone far from smoothly. Currently, I'm trying to graduate with my English degree and am set to do so this may. The stress on my family has been immense, and, despite my reliance upon Stoic philosophy, the situation has been very stressful on me as well. But yeah, nothing has gone smoothly; this has been going on since August.

Yes, I've read your thread - you're being through dire times.
Despite I don't see here a victory with flying colours, there is a chance to close the case. It is possible that you are the superior man who pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds, accepting imperfection of the legal system and solving the situation with only partial satisfaction. To find out if there are other options you need additional casting.

I've been through some Yi-related reading and found an interpretation which I thought may be useful for you:
Line's behaviour (of nine one) for divinatory reference : One is cast as the
supporting role; one's performance is limited but one still can make achievements
within the assigned domain; it is auspicious to take aggressive action in respect
to achieving the joint target. The hexagram that appears while this line is
is activated is Xie (40), to alleviate, where tension (between the wife and concubine)
is released. Recommendation at this stage: to act according to the assigned task
and with the permitted power.

What is interesting, Pathfinder puts hex 54 as Arrest and hex 40 as Liberation.

Fey wolf,

I took your advice and decided to ask another question about my situation. This time I asked the Yi: What can I do to help my legal situation resolve favorably?
I got Hexagram 20.1.5>27
The general feel of Hexagram 20 seems to speak to the current context: Contemplation. I'm in a situation where I am contemplating all sides; however, Six at beginning shows that my "Boylike contemplation" doesn't suite me if I wish to be a "superior man." The Nine at fifth seems to point towards a need to contemplate my life and the "effects" that I produce. Only by contemplation of myself can I be free of mistakes.

The potential Hexagram 27 is a bit less obvious to me. Does this show that I need to reorient my focus towards what has already been said about this case? Any further explanations of these hexagrams would be greatly appreciated.

Hello again, Sun Wukong.

Hex 20 is not only about contemplating and seeing, but also about being seen and observed. This may refer to the litigation itself or suggest making your case known (friends, press, social networks etc).

20.1 represents how you got into this situation or your current attitude which may be either naïve or too straightforward, like black-and-white.
Siu's commentary on this line is quite eloquent:
At the outset, the man does not comprehend the nature of prevailing forces nor does he perceive them as a connected whole. The superficial view is acceptable for the masses, but the superior man should know better.
As I already wrote, a sacrifice may be needed. "Contemplation shows us a worshipper who has purified himself, but must still present his sacrifice with that dignified sincerity which inspires reverence." Maybe, this trial is not just a pain in ass, but a Trial of yours, especially if you go the path of spirit.

My opinion is you should concentrate on finding a superior who is able to help you or to take for a model from the earlier court processes similar to yours (20.5). Fan yao (23.5) seconds it: "A string of fish. Favor through the palace people. There will be harvest." Pay attention to the women in power.

27: It's highly essential to pick up words now very carefully. Legge: "the superior man... controls his speech". If you are to make a speech in front of the jury/court or give evidence (again, being seen), this may be your chance to bring on your side the jury or that powerful person (the judge?). But you should think it out properly considering the peculiarities of the people you are going to influence (this what hex 20 is about). Probably by using meditation technics (this is hex 20 domain, too).

Wish you luck ;)
