I have been consulting for manymonths now. PLease help me; What is the implication of DIRECTION in certain hexagrams? Many times I have received for example hex.39 'TROUBLE' which indicates that 'the south and the west are favourable.' Does this mean that should I literally (and physically) move in either of these directions in connection with my plans so that I might avoid the trouble forewarned against?

If not, what else could this mean? I have had it before with K'un and thought that since I now live in London having used to live to the NE in Norwich that my friends there would be lost to me.

I am also confused by the fact that the Chinese have traditonally had north at the bottom and south at the top. DOes this mean I reverse the poles, and hence travelling EAST OR NORTH is instead a good idea .......

i m soooo confused. :footinmouth:

If you have some kind of problem moving in the various direction will not make that problem just disappear.

The direction given can be useful if you are trying to find the best direction to go to achieve business success for example. I have used it this way and have had excellent results in the past.

It doesn't matter if north is at the bottom or the top the direction are just as normal, nothing gets reversed unless you live in the southern hemisphere.

Use your common sense.

mike, hi,
Do you know your feng shua gua number? What year were you born in? I am assuming you are male?
Once you know your gua number, your directions will have specific importance for you. I have found that the I ching alrady 'knows' my directions and administers them along with the hexes it yields.
For instance, I am a West 2. My auspicious and inauspicious directions are specific to this group according to the system. So... what year were you born in? I can then apply some relevance or insight perhaps in regard to the the direction you are being encouraged in, so to speak.

Better yet, here's how to find your gua number. It's based on the Chinese lunar calendar.
If you were born before February 7th, go back a year - ie, if your b-day is Feb 5, 1955, go back a year using 1954.
You then add the last two numbers of the birth year and, for females - add the number 5. So: 5+4=9 and 9+5=14, which reduces to 5 (1+4) . This person, a female would be an West 5.
Males subtract the sum of the last two digits of their birth year from 10. A male born in 1954: 5+4=9/ 10 -9 = 1. An East 1.
I can then tell you generally about your auspicious or inauspicious directions.

1 is East
2 is West
3 is East
4 is East
5 is West
6 is West
7 is West
8 is West
9 is East

Example:
Birthday May 9, 1961 Female
Add the last 2 numbers of your birth year , 6+1=7 , then add 5, so 7+5 = 12 which reduces to 3 (1+2), she is an East 3
same day male, 6+1=7, then subtract from 10, so 10-7=3, he is an East 3.

Note, If the gua number turns out to be five, men use the same ausic/inauspic directions as West 2 and women use the ones for West 8.

I have double checked these, they are correct. Don't know what six kililings or five ghosts means, just that they with the other two inauspicious are unlucky.
I will check back to see if there are questions.

Hi solun,

This sounds interesting. So, im an East 9.
Not sure how to phrase my question, so i'll try an example.

The lists say that NW would signify "total loss".
What would that mean in practical terms?

That in theory i should not take that direction in general?
Not to live in a NW area? Or what else?

thanks,
diamanda

Hi diamanda,

First - total loss in my understanding
'total Loss' is inauspicious. But I think the directions pertain to the crux of one's inquiry. Total loss could refer to the total result of the experience being not beneficial in any way, even an experience of loss perhaps, and not simply lack of benefit.

As concerns the issue of direction, it refers to direction as a vector (yes geographically), but not direction as a location in and of itself. The vector is relative to your location, but it is not your exact location per se.

Let's say you live in the NW of the US, Seattle or something. You ask the IC about relocating with regard to your economic picture. But remember, with the Yi it's best to be as specific as you can be. Clearly, this clears up a lot of questions at the outset. Because if someone asks a question that's vague, you're just gonna be shaking the stalks so to speak until you get what you came for or not in terms of an answer.
So revise - the question is about your professional/economic picture more specifically. And of course you can get even more specificer if you want ... !
The Yi answers with a NW thrown in there in some arrangement of your information which only you will understand the context of. I would say this means don't move to Alaska, don't open up an office there, don't start a crab fishing business, don't take a work party to the NW beach, don't get an office in the NW part of town, etc ... it could, in terms of feng shua, mean just don't orient your work space or desk toward the NW. For professional and economic reasons, limit travel in that direction. Again, in your query , cast with a certain time frame in your picture, say for the next five years where should I be ... ? The Yi will respond to your clouds, it's up to you to dispell as many of them as possible in your question to reach greater clarity.
Hope this helps.

But the direciton is basically that, a direction. It's relative. These general directions are for your specific gua number, so yes, in general the direcitons hold for what is lucky or not. Focus on the lucky directions if you can. Make entrances to your home free of clutter in those areas. If your entrance to your living space is from an unlucky direction, do something 'light' to mitigate it - a crystal or chime, an angel or saint, mandala, something to ease the element that the direction represents. Northwest is water and metal. So no water fixtures or metal frame pictures in that area of your home or business.,, the like. Take metal away if you can, or cover it. Don't use the opposite direcition elements, like wood or fire. That creates too much tension, just mitigate, usu with an earthy something, like rocks, mineral geodes, crystals, nice procelain or some pottery. But keep it simple. And play up you lucky directions, free of clutter also. Google feng shua, there's lots of stuff out there. :)

North - water
South - fire
East - wood
West - metal

center of bagua - earth

Ok i think i know what you mean now, that it can be used both generally,
and more specifically, as an extra info hidden message. Thanks so much
for explaining, and for all the information, i'll certainly look it up.
