Too much wine!

I've always been a fan of wine and have enjoyed a glass or two with meals for years. But little by little, a glass or two turned into more and more and now, along with my husband, we often open another bottle after dinner. I want to get off this carousel and get back to enjoying my glass or two - and yes, I know all about habits and breaking them et al., But I'm certain there's more to this than pure habit, which is the reason for asking this question. Any ideas on how to interpret it would be very welcome. Thanks!!

Hi Debraa,

I believe you forgot to add the hexagram ;).
Hi there - sorry - this is my first time posting...

I asked the question, 'so, what's with drinking so much wine' and received Hexagram 23, Stripping Away - changing line 6. That leads to Hexagram 2 Earth. The image is one of the old patterns stripping away - painfully, it would seem - and yet, at this time, I'm not in the position to consider what might replace the old patterns. I've had this Hexagram before regarding other non-alcoholic issues, too. I've no choice in this 'stripping away'. Changing line 6 suggests, however, that I may be closer to the end of this process than in the past (I don't recall getting that line before).

So now the question focuses not so much on what is stripping away but on how I deal with it. Am I the 'noble' one who can make something good and new due to having stripped old patterns away? Or am I like the 'small people' who cling to the old even though it's crumbling all around me? I would dearly love to believe I am not clinging, so I needed to ask this question.
On the other hand, I still have too much wine - last night being yet another notable example.

I'll be honest. I do not know, and I do not know how to puzzle it out. But to take a guess, I'd suggest that I'm in the 'small people' category.

Which leads to Hexagram 2 - Earth. How does this fit it?! How (if at all) might it help me make the transition from small people to a noble one (if indeed it is and I suspect)?

Thanks

It's hard not to notice that wine is made of fruit and in the line the ripe fruit isn't eaten (or not drunk, as the case may be), and also that the line's about ripe fruit, fruit that's allowed to fully ripen to the point where it falls naturally. Isn't aging a "thing," with wine?

Okay, but what to do with that as an answer...I don't know. Are you drinking sub-optimal wine just because it's there, instead of waiting till it's at its best? Or could you buy better wine and enjoy it more if you stuck to the glass or two? Could anything like that be an incentive?

Which is more like advice than the explanation you asked for. Advice could be how Yi means it, but I've missed seeing perfectly direct answers before and might be doing that this time.

(Hexagram 2 would be the greater field of possibilities you might have...at least tbrough the glasses I'm seeing this through.)

Hmm, not sure the I Ching agrees there is an issue. I mean this reads like the I Ching doesn’t see the concern at least not if you’ve got a strong stomach (cart) to can carry all that alcohol, although it might destroy your guts (strip your hut) if you don’t… but hey, if you drink really good well aged wine (thanks Liselle) there should be..
2. No problem!!!

And there's how it can be a perfectly good direct answer! :) Thank you, Rosada!

I might hazard a guess this isn't just about wine, stopping having an extra glass or so isn't enough that's why the answer says

'A ripe fruit not eaten.
Noble one gets a cart,
Small people strip their huts.'

You need to do something more radical than stop opening more wine and it could be perhaps more of a lifestyle change is needed. If you are drinking more wine your brain is switching off, maybe your brain could be doing other things. I don't know maybe you need to start having a different way of living your leisure time altogether? It's possible the wine is covering over dissatisfactions and it's those you need to deal with.

I mean yes too much wine is not good and so if you think that needs to stop then yes but this answer does seem to be talking about more radical changes unless stopping this extra bottle is a radical change for you....Why not try not having any wine at all for a while, it's not a necessary thing is it?

Your question was only
I asked the question, 'so, what's with drinking so much wine' and received Hexagram 23, Stripping Away - changing line 6. That leads to Hexagram 2 Earth
I don't really know what you are asking? You aren't asking how to stop you just ask 'what's with?' so I'm not sure what specifically you are asking? It could be just a general 'tell me about this' I guess?

I don't think it means just carry on as you are.

Line 6
Excellent fruit is uneaten
There's better ways to enjoy the benefits of fruit
the noble one obtains a wagon
Abstinence from alcohol (wine)
the ordinary person removes his hut
stripping the house of wine

ah yes, that interpretation also fits, maybe even better.
I can see the noble one obtaining a wagon and the small person stripping their hut as meaning the noble one can just move away from the temptation - like just take your glass away - but if one is not so strong then they strip the house of wine. The “excellent fruit uneaten” might not necessarily mean the wine should remain uneaten. Rather it could just mean that if you want the drink to remain uneaten here’s how to do it - either remove yourself or remove the wine.

Yes!!
I love drinking wine and eating chocolate too but the best way to NOT is to not have them in house.

There's a trend at the moment called Damp - it's about drinking alcohol mindfully. ie. Just having that 1 or 2 glasses with dinner ☺ 🍷

I find personally that I can get in phases where I work and get busy with life stuff and I don't think about drinking very much. I also tend to eventually get very stressed eventually when this happens, as it means I'm not really stopping to relax and smell the Rosé(roses) I also go into phases where I get to be drinking a bit more than maybe I should,

But, what I've learned is that sometimes one can get into autopilot sort of with it and I find that voice in me telling me I should have more it will be fun, I've learned that sometimes when that happens, one must realize, no, I don't need another right now and realize I am feeling good with a nice buzz going and another won't increase that.

Know that there is a level where you actually aren't getting any more buzzed bc your body can only process so much at a time; you are just adding more hangover instead. Another thing I do is if I get totally smashed on a particular night, could just be having fun with friends, that's ok, but, well then I go off for a couple weeks to allow myself to recover. It's just a sort of system of checks and balances to make sure I don't get too addicted.
