Hello, I am pretty new to I Ching, I was actually only introduced to it about 7 months ago. This is my first time asking a question.
I feel like I understand the general idea behind the “answers” but would be very appreciative of any insights/interpretations.
I am embarking on a very new career that feels like a life calling, I would very much like to find a mentor to guide me and help my knowledge grow, which is why I asked:
How do I find my mentor?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi lanietade

How do I find my mentor?
1 <> 45

'Inspiring Force' through 'Great Work'

You find your mentor by constantly and unceasingly being on the look out for the inspirations that exist all around you. There is no one special person whose arrival you have to pin all your hopes on. A mentor, and associated mentorship, is not something you find it is something that comes to you. Remember the old adage that goes something like 'When the student is ready the master arrives.'

Yi, I believe, is advising you to see things differently from the life circumstances that have formed the background to your question. Revise them to become a new more specific and exciting context for you to live your life in. Your Great Work is to assemble and bring together these things now. That will mean that you become the type of student who portrays a readiness to receive your mentor. Waiting for a mentor, or constantly carrying a frame of mind that that says 'I'm still looking' is no way to get the ball rolling. Looking constantly into the distance for what might be on the horizon diminishes your awareness of what is already positioned close to you.

The Great Work of your life is already underway and much of your current thinking is just putting the cart before the horse. It is neither truly inspirational nor something that will gather a queue of mentors all lining up right in front of you.

1.1 - Your inspiration is fast asleep.
1.2 - Good News! Your inspiration is becoming visible to you out in the fields. Your first readjustment is to connect more thoroughly with that which is already visible to you.
1.3 - Your yang is just too yang and it will help to get things moving if you are able to slow down and take time to smell the roses that are already growing in your proximity.
1.6 - Pride comes before a fall.

Lines 1,2 & 3 changing together, perhaps, indicate that a complete re-landscaping of your inner world is due in order for you to smooth out the ruts and bring together, without any incumbent trip hazards, what belongs together in your life.
It might be worthwhile for you to reflect, at some point, on how much room really exists for a mentor to take up residence in your world, if you are eventually successful in finding the right one.

... or other interpretations may be more inspirational for you.

Good Luck

Hi Lanietade,
How do I find my mentor?
Based on answer H1 <> H45, the question arises: to what extent are you open to being guided by a mentor?

H1 with 4 moving yang lines has way too much yang energy.
The entire lower trigram Heaven consists of moving yang lines and is definitely not open to advice or guidance from others.
Heaven with 3 moving lines is authoritarian, a pedantic, my will is law, self-centred.
Earth is the exact opposite, it is open, supportive, nurturing, giving space, the balance of give and take.
So the combination Heaven - Earth shows a 180-degree turnaround of an inner attitude.

The upper trigram Heaven turns into Lake due to the moving line at the 6th position.
This is about wanting to have and keep control, to give directions while one has no authority to do so.
Lake advises communicating with an open attitude and on the basis of equality. It is also about being cheerful, seeing the positive in the other person and/or the situation.

H45 is the hexagram of collecting, completing. This hexagram seeks to make something complete by supplementing what is missing. The nuclear hexagram of H45 is H53 the Gradual Progress. This shows that the process of H45 is gradual.

What is missing here that needs to be completed?
  • When only the 1st line moves, Heaven turns into Wind.
This is about taking off masks and showing your true nature. Who are you really in the sense of your true identity, your blueprint.
  • When only the 2nd line moves, Heaven turns into Fire.
This is about, in contact with others/relationships, letting the heart speak instead of the mind. Not a straightforward and rigid attitude, but one with feeling.
  • When only the 3rd line moves, Heaven turns into Lake
This is about openness and honesty towards oneself. Dare to look figuratively in the mirror. Make the choice to accept the challenge with oneself to change.
  • When only the 6 line moves, the upper trigram Heaven turns into Lake. This is about changing behaviour in and towards the outside world. Deal with others in an open and honest way and on the basis of equality. See the positive in others.
The way I see it, the Yi says you find a mentor by changing your attitude, the only question is whether H1 with 4 moving lines wants to take that advice :D.

This would be my interpretation. As always, take what resonates and leave the rest 😉

I do admit that I have a very specific idea of who my mentor will be and what I would learn from them! I guess I need to release those ideas and be open to whatever mentorship appears and whatever results from that?

I definitely have a problem with always looking far away from me, thinking I have to find something that is far beyond my reach before I have the perfect sailing conditions! It’s so fascinating how accurate this is!
