Will I be able to change my job next year? 52.5>53

Hi, first time posting. I’ve been teaching at a school for over 10 years. There have been issues with the school — I don’t have any breaks, so I am getting burnt out; it pays all right, but not great, and there isn’t any visible improvement in the future, in fact I had to fight for my last raise. I have had a contentious history with my superior (I’m not the only one), and so I go in, do my job, and leave. There is a dysfunctional climate there, for sure. I want very much to change jobs and schedules, but afraid to do so for financial reasons — as poorly as we are paid at the school, it has been stable so far, and there aren’t a lot of jobs in the area, so I am concerned a move will put me in the poorhouse.

I’ve gotten 52 before — it seems to be about keeping still, meditating on things, and not forcing things. Perhaps my issue will become clearer from the stillness. The 5th line seems to direct me to not react — but to make sure my words work in harmony with the way things are. I have certainly been holding my tongue at work, and observing things. Trying to stay open to anything positive, job-wise. 53, Gradual Progress, feels like more of the same. Wait, watch, take small steps.

Any insight would be helpful. I feel like I’ve been in a holding pattern for a few years now, and I want very much to jump ship, but not to drown!

Thanks!

Hi nuttyryan and happy new year to you.

I agree with what you wrote in your analysis of this cast. I'll just add a different spin on it.
"to make sure my words work in harmony with the way things are"
Find out online what the current 'best practice' terms are for teaching.
Find out what they're looking for.
Meticulously re-write every single word of your CV.
Similarly, comb through every word of ads you look at, in case you end up in another toxic job.
53 is promising, as it shows an engagement process.
So overall a positive reading, if you really rehearse your words and scan theirs. Good luck :)

I'm still just learning I Ching myself, I'm in the middle of the email course so I don't feel like I know enough to comment yet, however I too got 52 in a series of queries related to my own job situation so I sympathise and will be watching this thread, still I hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts as it reminded me of an acquaintance who was also a teacher and I wanted to piggy back off what diamanda says though these are my own thoughts.

Essentially 10 years of qualified experience in a job is a boon that I imagine will pay for itself, no reason to stay somewhere you are unhappy, instead strategise the best way or the most financially feasible way you can leave, perhaps run some ideas by Yi, perhaps work out how much you need to live on and how long it would take to save the amount you'd need for several months should you lose this job or feel you have to leave it, having a specific time period in mind to do this (as you say, a year) might also help focus your thoughts so the job doesn't feel so never ending and hopeless, perhaps check out your trade union, note these dysfunctional things down that you observe with date and time and who did what and what you did, in other words cover yourself.

In terms of checking out new jobs for the future again imo perhaps plan the best way to go about job searching, ask Yi and run some ideas by the oracle, maybe you can build some value in the year that you can more easily sell to employers when you leave, so job shows and open days might be an option, perhaps there's some teaching association or other that has some work links, meeting people has helped me find jobs so check out your local network for info, and online local network for info like neighbourhood forums and local networking sites, social media like facebook and linkedin are supposedly very good for business and I'm aware there are apps for work now - there may be a tutoring opportunity there who knows and of course fill in applications, these are just some ideas.

Also employer review sites might help you avoid another sticky job in the future.

Sorry if you have already thought of many of these and I know it's not an answer to your question, however I just think if you have provided such a long and dedicated service to a job and you are getting hassle in return surely it counters reason to stay there, when better employers out there would be willing to pay in just as stable a manner the same amount or higher, I think your question might be better phrased concerning how to best go about finding these employers, or how to do so while remaining financially stable, or what you might have to do in order to accomplish this in a year. Thankfully diamanda's interpretation suggests a positive result.

Thanks for your input! I am doing some of the things you mentioned. As with any situation, there are a few issues that intersect, namely, where I live. I’m still here for my kids, as I am divorced, and this is my ex’s home. It is a highly expensive place to live, so I don’t have a lot of space to breathe, financially.

I’ve asked Yi about my living situation, my job, my sons’ schooling (which could affect job and home). Waiting is becoming frustrating, but seems to be a necessary test in patience!

It's fruitful patience it if there's something worthwhile waiting on the other side I think, although it's really difficult hang in there, let us know how it turns out, wishing you the best with it.
