I would like to be able to type hexagrams. The best I have been able to come up with is

███..███
███████
███..███
███████
███..███
███████

Does anyone have a better solution?

Hi Tom,

Take a look at this old thread.

Luis, there seems to be no way to type hexagrams line by line. In Notepad these two lines are the same length and can be used to make a neat typable hexagram:

▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄

In Clarity's "Reply to Thread" box, the yin line is longer. In the displayed version, the yin line is shorter.

The inability to type hexagrams is a major limitation on I Ching studies.

Tom, when you said "typable hexagrams" I thought you meant whole hexagrams you could type with a single keystroke. I also thought you meant for programs like Word. Those fonts I made available a while ago would do that. Also, Adele Aldridge recently created her own fonts, which include keystrokes for single likes (and changing lines to boot) and I'm sure she'd love our support. Take a look here.

Now, when you are trying to type lines manually, you must select a "mono-spaced" (fixed width) font, like Courier New, available here, at the top of the post window. You can select different fonts for different parts of your posts, so, if you want to type hexagram lines, try selecting an appropriate font for it.

Also, you could create simple image files for the lines, upload them to a server you use (such as Google pictures) and use the "Insert Image" tool above. For a whole hexagram, simple cut/paste of the lines with the codes, either yin or yang, would do. You are welcome to use my own hexagram pictures, created a few years ago and hosted in my site. For example:

h1.gif
Which has the following code:

http://www.yitoons.com/hexagrams/h1.gif

You would simply replace the number next to the "h" with the hexagram number you are looking for.

Luis, thank you very much. I am now able to post hexagrams with labeled parts using the code tag of BBCode.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode

Iceland Volcano
Code:
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄ fire
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄ mountain
▄▄ ▄▄

Hexagram 28 as a ladder, the image used in stratagem 28 of the Thirty-Six Stratagems
Code:
▄▄ ▄▄ end of the ladder
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄ rungs of the ladder
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄ end of the ladder

Exactly what I needed.

BBCode, alas, works here but not in the Blog.

Code:
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄

Hiding one's candle under a bushel.

Hexagram Design

A limited preview of Rutt's "Zhou Yi: A New Translation with Commentary of the "Book of Changes" is no longer available at Google Books, which is too bad because I intended to quote him on the aesthetics of drawing a hexagram. A well-drawn hexagram is talismanic with powers of suggestion:

Code:
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄

It has hidden light. The hexagram should be a rectangle because it moves upward. A hexagram drawn as a square appears stodgy and dull. Maybe the ideal shape would be the golden ratio. Wikipedia shows such a rectangle here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

The shape of the lines is also important. They should not be too heavy:

█████
██..██
█████
█████ Lines too heavy and not enough space between lines.
██..██
█████

Nor should they be too light. A major defect of Balkin's I Ching is its weak and flimsy lines -- untrue to its subject matter. The spacing between the two segments of a yin line is also important. These three dimensions -- hexagram shape, line shape, and yin space -- should be mathematically expressible.

The Ideal Hexagram

φ = 1.618034

Maybe:

hexagram height = φ X hexagram width.

line height = 1/11 X hexagram height.

yin space = 1/3 X hexagram width.

The problem then becomes to set the hexagram width, which should be proportional to page and font.

The hexagrams may be typed using single-stroke characters: ☰ ☷ ☳ ☴ ☵ ☲ ☶ ☱. The are more legible when in bold: ☰ ☷ ☳ ☴ ☵ ☲ ☶ ☱. Anyone wishing to use them may copy and past. They work in both the BBCode used at Clarity and in text files set to Unicode (UTF-8). However, they are distorted when italicized by being quoted in BBCode, have an unsightly gap when used to make hexagrams, and a label cannot be typed next to a line.

Size set to 8:

Within text files, graphic characters may be used to draw hexagrams.

▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄

█████
██ ██
█████
█████
██ ██
█████

These characters are distorted in BBCode as above, but will display properly when copied into a text file. In my experience they work correctly in email.

Code:
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄
▄▄ ▄▄
▄▄▄▄▄▄

On further experimentation, I am not sure how the above characters will display in email. If the font is set to text and the spacing in yin lines is adjusted to look right in the sending email, then apparently it will display properly in the receiving email.

Are these used in your Yijing?

No- I made up a set of gifs for the diagrams and the characters.
For the Chinese text I used Big5.
I think the Mac symbol set is Unicode.
