Hi, thanks, I have been thinking about this topic for years and cannot come to some conclusive principles. I am only sure, from my experiance, they are important and we shouldne ignore them. Like recent example: I got 39 in connection to some travel that was in front of me....i have drove for 700km and then 5 kilometers before the end of my journey the police unit got me on their camera for over speeding. I paid the ticket and got really frustrated with myself. Next day i looked again in my I ching diary and noticed that 39 has 64 as nuclear( possible mistake just before the goal achived) !!Hmmm. I was just thinking about nuclear hexagrams, so I'll give this one a shot. I don't think that the nuclear hexagram in anyway directly addresses the question you put to the Yi. Rather, it tells you something about the meaning and structure of the hexagram you receive, background information, its theme. You could divine for years and not worry about nuclear hexagrams.
Wilhelm's Book Three deals a lot with nuclear trigrams, rather than hexagrams -- he barely ever talks about the latter. For example, he looks at 60 Limitation and points out that the upper nuclear trigram is Gen, Mountain: which is a barrier, a block, a limiting, constraining force. Much of his ideas about 60 relate to that trigram.
PS It's also fun to group hexagrams together according to their common nuclear hexagram. There are only eight nuclear hexagrams, and each one is associated with eight primary hexagrams. You can try to find common themes or ideas, links between the eight hexagrams associated with a particular nuclear. And then you can look at the secondary nuclears, the nuclear of the nuclear. There are only four of them: 1, 2, 63, 64.
Any hint ?'Nuclear' / 'Mutual' / 'Core' or, in Bent Nielsens "A companion to Yi Jing Numerology and Cosmology" *, 'Interlocking trigrams'. See under 'Hu Ti ' where you'll get a concise, and yet in-depth, explanation of this phenomenon.

Any hint ?
Hi, I checked for that Nielsen book you recommended on the net, but it is little expensive for me at the moment. Thank you anyway.OK, so it wasn't information on the subject you asked for in the sense I thought. Here is a thread I started where I tell about my personal view on it.
It's factual information on the subject so if you are interested try the library and if they can't help you try pdfdrive.com who had it some years ago for download.Hi, I checked for that Nielsen book you recommended on the net, but it is little expensive for me at the moment. Thank you anyway.
I went through your thread, interesting stuff.

To give any guidelines on how the nuclear hexagram works in readings I think depends on each situation and to stay open as far as it gives meaning, as in your reading here above (#4) where maybe you'd been aware of what happened, had you taken the nuclear hexagram into consideration or just had it in mind (?), but those guidelines would never be general I think, or being useful in other situations.
For my part, I have only had my attention on them when consulting the I Ching but I haven't taken them as the main answer as received from the I Ching.
thank you. very nice, critical analysis and explanation. it support my understanding that the 16 Nucs have no separate identity in I ching. And, yes, I also didnt find anywhere in the classisc something about their practical application. And, in case you haven't watched it: Harmen Meskers brilliant video on the subject,
