Hello! I am in need of guidance making a big decision. I am about to finish my MFA in creative writing and am deciding what to do next year. I have two choices: stay where I am and adjunct while focusing on my writing, or go teach English at a boarding school I love and taught at briefly many years ago. The boarding school is appealing to me because I'd have a steady income and would be able to teach things I'm interested in in an exciting, progressive, arts-focused setting—BUT I'm afraid I would have no time to write, would have no work/life balance, and would be further from my family. Staying where I am and adjuncting is appealing to me because I love the home and community I've established here, and think I would have more time to write, BUT I would make very little money and have no stability.
I asked the I Ching: "What would happen if I chose to accept the boarding school position next year?" and received hexagram 10.1.4.5 changing to hexagram 4. I am a little confused, but am vaguely interpreting this to mean that it would be a challenging situation that I would have to approach delicately (stepping on the tail of a tiger), but that I could make it work. Not sure about hex 4 though (would it be youthful folly to return to busy teaching life?)
Then I asked the I Ching: "What would happen if I chose to stay where I am and adjunct next year?" and received hexagram 17.5.6 changing to hexagram 21. I understand hex 17 to be auspicious, like maybe this is a good time to focus on writing—but it will be difficult so I have to be sure that I want it?
