hi all,

since i am still really coming to grips with the power of the Yi, and I have been voraciously exploring, I am still in the midst of really becoming comfortable with the hexagrams and need to confirm what I am getting.

The man that I love comes from a different culture than my own and because of that his parents currently are throwing up road bocks to his desire to be with me. I respect both him and his family and understand these differences. Still, I had asked the Yi whether my guy will overcome these objections in the end (so that we may be together at last), and i received

17.3 > 49

Since not only the culture, but the family culture he is in has a tendency to force their children to submit to their parent's wishes, I was thinking of this answer from the Yi as positive, i.e., moving from the child to the adult and thereby following his own truth and making the necessary transformation. Just curious whether I am on the right track here.

Thanks so much for your time and assistance,

Hi Modestlearner,

I think you are on the right track. .....the yi could be advising that this is this man's current psychological challenge OR that he has already decided to step up to the plate. Keep us posted as to how it goes!

Okay, so it is possible that this is not the future even though I had phrased my question about that? Little confusion there....

Thanks again!

anything is possible. but when asking about someone else, it is tricky. also, imo, yi responses speak to the energy in flux at the moment.

i have asked about other people many times and I usually trust the answers can give me a glimpse at the energy of that person's stance ( some disagree) and in that sense, the answer is favorable that he is moving in the direction you would like . I meant that, at the very least, he is facing that 17.3 challenge and moving towrds 49.

however, what he actually does/will do....well, that is part of his challenge. Perhaps it is already underway in your favor.

and not to dismay you, but sometimes, I find the yi mirrors the question you ask. And 17.3 perfectly describes the challenge your friend is facing. HOwever, if the energy was stuck, or if he was uncertain, or if he was really not ready to stand up to his parents, then I think you wouldve gotten a much different response.

We have had many discussions on this board as to whether the yi tells the future or simply decribes the present energies at work. I believe that it can definitely hint at the future, but only if the energies at present are moving in that direction.

the reason I am tentative about giving you a more definite thumbs up is that personally, i have worked with people from such cultures. I came to understand how difficult it can be to break away from parental expectations of this sort, and sometimes the person truly wants to, but vacillates and is sometimes overwhelmed by the opposition ( his parents in this case) . so this is why I said it looks favorable from the 17.3 > 49.....but this is the book of changes! a person could be heading in one direction and then succumb to pressure again. there is not a guarantee, based on a positive reading, that the one in question will stay the course.

But as I say, the reading could very well mean that yes, he is meeting the challenge and transforming.
sorry if I confused you!

I think you're on exactly the right track.

Used in some traditional marriage vows:

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Gen 22.4

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Mat 19:6

At the same time, remaining true to convictions may be deeply rooted in him, enough to cling to what he considers to be the strong man, relating to his religion and culture.

Is it a prediction, or is Yi saying what it would take for him to (as bamboo said) step up to the plate? Please let us know, and may the best man win you.

i am far from disappointed and you did not confuse me! as much as i love this man, i also have had to learn to detach from the experience as i also sense this vacillation in him. and, since i have more detachment, i can also engage in this as a student of life, culture, and of the Yi!

Ultimately, what I liked about this response about the Yi is how it captured the *transformational* aspects of this experience. Whether this is a "snapshot" of his thoughts or whether it is a more overview of what he will go through and a prediction our the outcome remains to be seen. I do like this idea of "stance" of the moment.

But again, transformation is what is so compelling as a student or learner. Any further thoughts?

Thank you for your insights,
