Hello;

Today I was reading about 18.1 after having received this line as an advice on a situation where it can refer to me, another person or maybe both.

This cast may not sound good at first glance: the first line of the hexagram "can of worms/corruption/decay/detoxifying" leading to hexagram 26 that is about withholding from action and neutralizing a danger. No good news if you are enthusiastic, willing to go forward, make changes.

However, the line isn't negative: there is decay, coming from the past; and the young one (trying to rectify?) in danger/difficulty whose efforts are promising nevertheless.

As a general advice I'll interpret it as "the situation needs detoxifying. There are problems with deep roots. The rectification won't be easy, but any effort in this way will be rewarded."

I'd like to read your comments on this line.

Don't forget Remedying as name for this hexagram, for me, this name best describes the meaning of H18.

I agree.
The ills caused by the father refers to old patterns that have not been properly addressed in the past. The father is yang, action, outward. So this can be seen as old patterns related to action in the outside world that still have an impact today.
It is interesting to see that the Image text of H26 says the following:" Thus the superior person gathers knowledge of The words and deeds of the past, In order to strengthen his character And accumulate his virtue." So here again is a pattern from the past.
As a general advice I'll interpret it as "the situation needs detoxifying. There are problems with deep roots. The rectification won't be easy, but any effort in this way will be rewarded."
Yes, but I would lighten "deep roots" and "won't be easy". Don't make it too heavy (for yourself).
Depending on the question, this could also be about something as simple as cleaning up clutter from now on. Not tidying up can also be an old pattern that needs to be broken.

As always, take what resonates and leave the rest 😉

The line says

'Ancestral father's corruption.
There is a son,
The deceased elders are without fault.
Danger. In the end, good fortune.'

Lots of examples in wiki plus my own experience shows this line can be to do with

* redeeming the past

* connecting with the past to bring more light to the present

* sometimes the past gets a voice it didn't have in it's time for example think of those ignored in their lifetimes whose work is discovered bought to light by following generations

*sometimes correcting a predecessor's errors or even carrying out their wishes to set things straight

*sometimes simply getting the chance to correct an earlier error like accidentally ignoring someone but seeing them later and so erasing any cause for regret.

How to take it depends as ever on the scale of the question.

I think it helps far more to realise this is 26 in action in line 1 since it is things held from the past. 26 is the vast repository of knowledge and memory, words and deeds and so on and so one could say the 26 in 18 is right there in line 1. There is something there from the past held which can now be called upon to redeem. Knowledge coming from the past/out of the past can redeem a situation now. So doesn't make sense to think of 18.1 'leading to' a 26 situation but rather 26 is already fully present in 18.1.

This cast I see as totally encouraging. Yes, there are things that have been passed down through the paternal line, either to manifest in the world around or to have taken root within your character and behaviour, yet it is important to understand that you have the power within you to address these matters now.

The ancestral line, although perhaps filled with good intent, have not been strong enough in the past (through no fault of their own) to address these matters successfully and it now falls on you, or maybe even this generation, to make true amends.

Everything is not yet on clear view. It could take patience and time for the full extent of what needs remedying to show itself fully. However with a strong focus on bringing about a win / win situation there will be opportunity in the long run of bringing a new sense of stability and accomplishment into your lineage. In so doing you will heal not only current wounds but also wounds inflicted on past generations.

When the time is right you will know exactly what is needed of you in order to break the chain.

I’ve gotten this line to describe situations where a person has inherited an unfinished task and must pick up where the other one left off, hopefully no big deal but perhaps a warning to keep one’s affairs in order and up to date so as not to burden the next generation if one does suddenly have to leave.
26, with its wisdom from the past might then represent a will or instructions from the ancestor.
