28.2.5—>62… I haven't got a clue.

At first I asked a question on a completely different matter:

It's time for a full frontal assault, but of a whole other variety. Change tacks. Never let them see it coming. Looking for confirmation that this is how I should proceed with…

It involved dealing confrontationally with people and situations that are both rewarding and extremely frustrating, in which I often respond with aggression, with passive aggression, or with both. The resulting reading was Hexagram 44.5.6 and it was a humbling and enlightening reading. Never before has a reading so immediately and completely altered my attitude and approach to a situation. I understood that a long-term, loving approach was in keeping with the Tao and that the aggression I was feeling was better tempered, reserved.

And then I asked

I have heard and understood. I will refrain my earlier action. On a completely different subject, is there a way to less loneliness?

To which I received 28.2.5—>62. I'm stumped. If the prior reading was illuminating and freeing, then this one is cryptic.

I don't know that I assign powers of divination to the Yijing. I do believe, however, that Taoism offers the deepest and most complete understanding of the mystery in which we find ourselves. As such, a reading will bring my small, often petty concerns into the larger context of reality. It's very useful. I just don't know what 28.2.5 is offering here.

Any ideas?

28 says to be undaunted by this being alone.

Undaunted: not intimidated or discouraged by difficulty, danger, or disappointment.

What is the difference between being Alone and Loneliness?

Anything inherently wrong with being alone? Nope.
In fact it is a freedom. Freedom to choose your path, work on the things you want, go in the direction you want. Or even discover what you want.
You may be alone and realize you want friends or companions
(Because it is natural and good: this is how we are)

Anything wrong with letting yourself be dispirited and downtrodden by the neutral state of being alone? Yep.
Loneliness is a self perpetuating state. Loneliness says, "I'll be alone forever." And if you believe it, you'll buy in. You'll become an accomplice to making yourself miserable. You'll make yourself unattractive. Giving up your power to change things in the direction you wish.


You could attract a younger companion (line 2)
Or an older companion (line 5)
And it wouldn't matter which.

But It would be because of your good qualities like courage, not by the power of the mopiness, dreariness that manifests with loneliness that says, "Lay down and die."
Courage lets you stand up and walk to where you want to be.

I get this reading very often and solved it only recently... 62 represents your soul, your ego, as it should be, modest and careful. 28 represents an inflated ego, like mine. Inflated egos are not afraid to live alone.

So, to get friends we need to deflate our ego. The method for that is naturally 28.2.5. Line 2 is about being tolerant of younger people's weaknesses and line 5 is about recognizing our elders' qualities. Younger/elder is symbolic, we need to recognize our friends strengths and be tolerant of their weaknesses, regardless of their age.

Note that line 5 would be flattery if we praise qualities that don't exist.

Now if you pursue the reasoning, you want to avoid 62.2.5 > 28, 62.2 means showing disdain to someone's qualities and 62.5 pointing at someone's flaws.

Discard the old structure - the tree - and move in a new direction, starting with a young and fresh sprout.

28.5 Warns about continuing in the old pattern, blossoms on an old tree won't bring anything but temporary grace. A mask for others to see.
