2nd Hexagram (After the changes of the first)

Hi there...

What are some of the ways you all interpret the 2nd hexagram - the one the first one changes into to?

I've always read it....from first, follow the lines and you'll get the results of the 2nd.

Someone said the 2nd can be the alternative if you don't follow the 1st one.

Anyone else?

Thanks,
Rosalie

I used to see it as the outcome. If you followed the advice of the lines, you got the positive side of the second one, if you did not, then you got the negative side. Very often it made sense, but just as often it did not. Or rather: more often.

Now I see it as the "situation", or the "time". I think it is Karcher who calls it "the sea in which the primary hex swims".
E.g. when you get 6 to 14, then it is a time in which your talents can be done full justice, but for that you will have to know if or how to contend. The lines tell you about that.

Hi

I'd learned that the meaning of the Tendencial Hexagram depends on the kind of question you had asked:
a) If it is a "Predictional Question", then the first hexagram shows the forces afecting the present situation; and the Tendencial Hexagram shows not the "real future" but a "Tendencial future" IF you undestand and aplly correctly the answer (I mean.. if you flew whit Tao; if you doesn't flew whit Tao, the outcome could be the Complementary Hexagram)

b) If it is a "Counseler Question" or "Insight Question" (like, "is correct to do X?" or "Why X happened?" or "How is the right way to face X?"), then the first Hexagram shows you the objetive situation or advice; and the Tendencial Hexagram is a Wide Context, or your Subjetive Point of Wiew or Something you have to lear in orden to achieve the best from your objetive situation

Best wishes

I am with LiSe on this? mainly.

I think sometimes the second hexagram can also be the direction in which the first hexagram and lines are moving.

It is generally fairly easy to see which of the two it is.

My rule of thumb:

1 Look at the second hexagram first. If it describes the current overall situation then it is as LiSe describes? The second hexagram is the ?Overview?. In this case the primary hexagram is the specific situation and the changing lines are the oracle or advice? the vector/direction of change.
I often find that when the consultation gives a result like this then the ?overview? of the second hexagram often contains elements of the situation which I have missed and it is very informative.

2 If the second hexagram does not seem to fit what you perceive as the current situation then it is probably the likely result of the situation ? If you follow the advice.

The first hexagram should still describe the specifics of the situation and again the changing lines show the tension points? the where and how change is taking place. They modify the first hexagram and show how it is likely to lead to the situation represented in the second hexagram? All else being equal. The ?all else being equal? is about ones choices most often? follow the advice or not etc.

PS - Mostly it seems to be the first scenario in my experience...

Hi Jessed

I have a number of 'languages' I use with the Yi.

These involve different methods of interpretation and also which translations I am using.

The Yi seems to sense, or listen to which way I am approaching it and replies accordingly.

I have often seen people here getting a reply which makes immense sense given their approach and which would make less sense if other methods had been applied.

For me it is like talking to a person who will adjust what they say so to be understood by the listener.

So if you adopt the approach you describe then it should work?
