Hello Fellow Seekers,

Last week out of the blue I was asked to become Creative Supervisor in my agency. Myn bully of a boss is now more in Bombay than here bothering me and I think my karma with her her is finally over. Although I'm a Consultant and not on the rolls, I think I can do this as I've been Creative Director before, but at present anyway, there's no money in it. Lotta prestige and recognition though. So I asked the Yi whether I can fulfill this new role and got hex 32 changing lines 2 and 4 changing to 15. No game in the feild says line 4 -- huh? No money? No prospects? I know if I don't take up this role I could be replaced by a full-time Creative Sup (and I'm not full time here) and really I'm lucky to be given the preference here.

Any insights? Humility of course pays as in 15. It always does whether it's in my Temple or outside. I'm learning how to apply what I leran in the Temple to my world outside. It seem slike I'm being pushed to do so.

Hello Anita,

32 shows a tree or a root that grows new branches.
The tree/root doesn't go elsewhere, it grows where it is.
This seems to imply that there is indeed room for expansion in the place where you are (the agency).
That's a "yes!", I would say.

But I think that 15 suggests that the hoped for prestige and recognition is in fact not that important for you, at least not in the long run.

Any other (perhaps deeper?)motives and values?
Why would you like to be a Creative Director?
Please make a list ..

Hi Anita

We have already discussed this a little in private email so I won't go into that part of it. But line 2 in the Wilhelm Baynes translation seems to indicate that there might be a little fear of what the job may entail. A hidden fear factor of, "am I ready for this?" This line is central, but it is too strong. And it may use strength to cover its weakness. Line 4 I believe indicates that it is too easy to make too much of something that only has limited benefit. That's not to say it is of no value for you to have this new position. It is just that in itself it may not lead to any great rewards. Hexagram 15, you know about. However, in hexagram 15, we are counselled not only to be humble, but not to be over humble, we still need to recognize our worth, but only in its proper bounds. It may be counselling you here to understand that you do have the worth and the value to be able to handle this position. It is a matter of balance. On one hand, not letting it go to your head, one the other not feeling unworthy. Line 2 counsels us to avoid excess in either direction.

Good luck in this new opportunity!!!

Gene and Martin, many thanks.

Martin, I don't want to be CD. I've been that before. Plus, I want to move abroad next year anyway, so this can't be a long term thing for me.
It's not a 'career opportunity' as has been suggested here. However, it' s good to be recognised in the sense that they see me as capable enough. I am, I know, but I suppose a new challenge is always a bit scary at first. Thanks much both of you.

Hello Anita,

I see now that I wrote "Creative Director" instead of "Creative Supervisor".
Sorry for that, of course I meant "Creative Supervisor".
It's interesting that there was in fact no "career opportunity" involved, because hexagram 15 seems to reflect that.

All the best,

Martin

Martin,

The agency has been in a bad way for a long time and we haven't even had increments since at least two years that I've been here. We expect them this year -- but who knows. So, they can't afford to hire a CS and so have asked me to fulfill this role. I never asked for it. So I'll do my best in the situation. At least I'm glad that I still have a job that allows me flexible timings and freedom to surf the internet all day long! Not to mention the perks we get here like the cute little camera recently as part of the general agency. My division deals with Direct Marketing.

Also, Martin, I think the no game in the field has nothing to do with room for expansion and actually means its opposite -- no true career opportunity here.

Best for your Quest
Thanks
