#39 Opposition

Hi there:

I got lines 5 and 6 which seem contradictory.
Then, the changing hex. was 52.

Now, since the bottom tri of 39 is mountain and the inner tri is also mountain and then my hex. changed to 52 - double mountain.....

Does this mean I should stay still, introspective and figure out the obstruction?

The question I asked was about where I am in my life now.

Thanks,
Rosalie

hi,
I'm not the most experienced at this but I'll give my opinion. whenever i receive hex 39, i'd usually interpret it as telling me that there is something in my way, but the problem can be overcome if it's approached the right way. I don't think lines 5 and 6 contradict each other. line six seems to be saying very definitely, that you should not proceed, unless you want to end up with worse problems than you have right now. im not so sure about five - maybe its saying that you're just thinking to hard about your situation, when there's a soution staring you in the face. or maybe it means a solution is about to present itself. OR if you take it literally, there are people you know who can help you out if you let them...hexagram 52 says "it is intelligent to rest and take action at the proper times, and now is the time for inaction" and "the superior man does not go in thought beyond his current position" so I'd say yes, you should stay still and figure out the obstruction. don't take another step until you're completely sure you have it figured out and are ready to proceed.

hope this helped.

no problem, its a nice change to be helping someone rather than asking for help for once!

Peace, I think there's 3 main ways you can look at contradictory lines, generally.

- They represent different situations, different people, or separate sub-aspects of a situation and/or the answer from the Yi.

Try to distinguish both "threads" in the situation and react to each appropriately and somewhat independently.

- Aspects of each line are "blended" in the situation; you can think of this sort of like a musical chord (and thanks to Bruce for that particular metaphor :) )

To cope effectively, your reaction to the situation might also be a "blend" of factors. Kind of like good parenting: sometimes a little "tough love" is what's called for. But that doesn't mean there isn't love.

- The moving lines build a relating hex; the relationship between the main hex and relating hex is the main message, so don't worry overmuch about the particulars of the moving lines.

Base your reaction on considering the overall relationship between the hexes and the message that relationship carries, rather than any particular lines.

(FYI, I use all three styles of interpretation at different time, depending on the question/situation and what I think the "message" of the reading is.)

You seem to be interpreting in more or less style 3 - if that's how you're inclined to go forward, that's probably the right approach. After all, it is *your* reading... :)

It may also depend on the interpretation you use. The 2 I looked up for you have both lines suggesting a need for outside help, though in different ways. The lines might not be contradictory but just different ways of looking at the same problem/solution. Seems like it is suggesting there are some obstacles in your life that you need some additional assistance or cooperative effort to remove. Though I will say you have a point about all those mountain images. When an idea or image repeats itself like that, it usually has a meaning. Though maybe in this case, the mountain is signifying something else besides being still. They could represent strength or perhaps the obstacle itself. If you meditate, meditating on the mountain might help clear things up.
