There is nothing in the archives with this combo - the question was about what do I need to know about my life right now (work situation is very challenging).

It speaks about waiting, going through tough times but eventually finding the right thing to follow - am I right? Lise's commentary for the 5 lines in particular resonate with my situation in that I feel completely overrun with things I don't enjoy doing.

Any further comment would be very helpful as it is not always easy to see things this close up.

Also..

HAPPY NEW YEAR and MANY BLESSINGS to you ALL.

edit: Oh geez, I read the reading wrong. My bad.

I think the big picture is this. In the first hexagram the three yang lines wait for the Water to clear before pressing ahead. You are stuck where you're at until something better comes along. Now the details of this are that you're being led into the dangerous waters, for the yang lines are led by an equal number of yin lines, or the Thunder is led by the Lake (in 17).

Whether this is alright or not is uncertain. Usually 17 is fairly auspicious, but 5 is all about waiting, and if you're dependent on another person's actions, then you might be led into a situation before you are willing to tackle it on your own. Or... it could be saying, it's alright to be led by others into the dangerous situation, because otherwise you wouldn't tackle it on your own.

Or it could be saying: stick with the job, follow the group, do the things you don't enjoy doing, and wait... because something better is coming.

It looks to me as if the situation revolves around particular people (what a novelty ;) ), and that it is indeed a sticky situation and you are in a lot of danger, so to speak.

How to combat this however, is the key here, as waiting requires a certain behind the scenes work.

17.2 you must choose the right people to surround yourself with - you can't win everyone over. don't throw yourself away on unworthy people, because in doing so you are keeping away people who can actually help you move forward
17.3 let the inferior people in your life go, and though it will feel like a loss, you would need to remain firm in your resolve to strengthen your character. know what you want and what you don't want.
17.4 you have people around you who are emotionally attaching themselves to you (or you to them?) making them indispensable, but their intentions are not good. let go of these people at once, only by doing this you will find clarity.

Well, seems like there's a lot going on, no? :)

5.3.4.5 leads to 54, not 17.

well in that case:

54.2 someone ( or your job then?) has disappointed you, but you should keep your loyalty even in loneliness
54.3 you are in a lowly position and accepting a less than worthy role, no judgement, just the way things are
54.4 did you give up on something just recently and doubting it? well in any case, know that it was not a mistake, it only goes to show your worth and trust that the right thing will come to you, just a little belatedly :)
54 - fix your mind on the end and realise that this too shall pass.

Corrected. Again, my bad. Great take on the lines though.

Hehe, I didn't even realise you were quoting different lines, too. Good thing I know 54 all too well so it didn't take me a long time to interpret them :)

I posted the lines for 17 because they offer a perspective on how 17 is related to your situation. I have often found that looking at the lines of the result hex give me more solutions when the original hex just describes, e.g. in this case hex 5. so they are still valid in your case :)

I probably should've explained myself not just assumed that you knew what the heck I was on about. Yup, it is Monday indeed :)

I thought fan yao is different hex for each line? So complicated.

Where did 54 come from though??

Thanks anyway. :bows:

Ignore that, mryou1 said before editing his text that the hex turns into 54, but then he realised his mistake. Monday like it was, I didn't even check what he was saying :)
