I am a medical student and have the biggest exam in a couple of weeks.i asked yi about how my exams would go. And I got hexagram 52>12.
Does this mean I won't make it in exam and give up preparation altogether?

I think the interpretation of the answer depends entirely on the context of the question. Why did you ask this question to the Yi? For example, do you still have to start studying all the way through, are you dreading this exam, or are you just studying very hard and want to know if it is enough to pass the exam. Depending on what the background of this question is, a "good" interpretation can be given. So giving a little more background will make it easier for others to help you.

The future is not a given. The future is determined by the choices you make now. As I see it, the I Ching gives an advice or what the effect of a particular choice will be, but not a prediction of the future.
E.g. the I Ching's advice in this case could be that you should study harder if you were not currently doing so (this is an example, not an interpretation of your answer).

As I see it, H52/H12 says something about the condition in which you can resume studying for your exam. The conditions have to do with the (emotional) impact of the family situation.
The text of Judgment and the Image of H52 refer to meditation or a meditative state, inner peace and stability.
Jack Balkin says of the moving lines in H52:
The lines discuss the virtue of emotional tranquility through the metaphor of keeping parts of the body still, from the feet in line one to the head in line five.
line 3: don't try to suppress your emotions by approaching things too intellectually. You may be trying to keep yourself calm without really being so.
line 4: do not take thoughtless actions
line 5: here you have reached the right state of inner peace by being alert in communications

The related hexagram 12 is about obstacles and stagnation. The text of the Image says. "Thus the superior person restrains himself and preserves his inner virtue in order to escape difficulties and hardships"

Personally, I would see H52/H12 as a kind of condition you should meet in order to pass the exam. Inner peace and stability by distancing yourself (emotionally) from the family situation, it is of course up to you to determine whether this is possible in this situation.

As always, take what resonates and leave the rest ;)

Yes, I've been frenetically running in circles with the preparation and have been carrying this feeling of trepidation (they say medicos are the most neurotic after all lol); even a short break would make me feel guilty. I practice mindfulness and a short session of holotrophic breathing exercises does wonders.

Once I got hold of my condition I asked yi again about "insight on my current course" and received 26.4.6>34
26:cross the water without apprehension on a stable footing, honor your strengths to achieve great things
26.4=restraint builds power, by restraining my anxiety I build more power
26.6=accepting the noble destiny. Asks me to see why I chose the path on the first place( I liked the concept of being a healer since childhood )
Relating hexagram 34 says to pay attention to details and follow through with intentions, ideas, projects. And this line struck a cord
"Let your vision and higher purpose be your compass"
