I received this reading in answer to my question about insights into a romantic relationship which is not going too well. He is behaving really stupidly and has annoyed me and he knows it. We are currently not on talking terms.

The hexagram seems positive even though the situation itself isn't

Can anyone help me with an interpretation?

It may have gone as far as it can go. 55 describes something that has reached the apex. Next comes 56. Moving On.

Hex 55 incorporates the qualities ebb and flow, of waxing and waning, of clarity and delusion. These qualities apply very readily to relationships. The two constituent trigrams, Li and Chen can produce action based on clarity but they also produce the lower nuclear trigram of Sun - associated with shade and darkness. Carol Anthony describes Hex 55 as being the hexagram of 'eclipse.' The nuclear (root) hexagram of Hex 55 is Hex 28 a hexagram which illustrates very graphically the dangers of over-abundance or excessive fullness.

These are the elements contained within your situation. At this stage the I Ching is not offering you a direct way out because it wants you to consider carefully all the components of the situation - without harshness, fear or criticism. This is spiritual growth. If you can do this the wall of doubt and uncertainty presently surrounding you will dissolve and the way forward will become self-evident.

Hi River,
I coincidentally, received the same answer during this weekend, asking about how to better tap my intuition, which currently has been clouded by feelings. Even though it is not related to your question, I have the hexpretty fresh in my mind, so I thought of sharing a snippet from Ricardo Andree's book with you:

"La Plenitud interior se alcanza con un acto superior de renuncia. En este mundo poseer grandeza de espíritu y felicidad afectiva no es común, ni lo será nunca porque el Espíritu requiere de soledad, en una búsqueda que muy escasamente puede ser en compañía afectiva ideal; el ser espiritual se une al mundo a través de su renuncia a las cosas del mundo." -Spanish original

"Inner plentiness is reached by a superior act of renunciation. In this world, to possess greatness of spirit and affective happiness is not common, nor will it ever be, because the Spirit requires solitude, in a search that can rarely be in an ideal affective company; the spiritual being joins the World through the renunciation from World affairs"

From this perspective, maybe the Yi is advising you or giving you the insight to focus less on this situation (worldy affairs: annoyance, not being on speaking terms, this person acting stupid, etc. are sometimes situations that in the grandness of things don't have that much "weight") and instead focus on yourself, your inner core. Perhaps by doing so, your perspective on all things can change. Instead of getting annoyed you might learn to let things be, or understand the situation from a different perspective, etc.
