I have been seeing a person casually for a year. I felt led by events to make a move in either direction, either to commit further or back out (indeed, at the time, I rolled 28—Critical Mass), and I decided to commit to explore a more serious, monogamous relationship with this person.

I have struggled with avoidant feelings in relationships, and at this point in every relationship I've had, I begin to panic. I no longer have access to feelings of affection or desire, and they become snuffed out by fear. I feel no feeling other than fear attached to moving into deeper intimacy with this person, even though just weeks ago, I desperately desired to keep the relationship and the thought of losing this person seemed to light my heart on fire with passion—passion that I no longer seem to have access to.

So I asked the I Ching simply, where am I in this situation? What may I see?

The I Ching replied with 12.4.5.6: Obstruction/Standstill changing to Earth/Submission.

Readings with more than a couple changing lines are often tough for me because it feels a little like information overload. However, I do find it interesting that the entire top trigram is changing from Heaven to Earth.

I'd love to hear thoughts and feedback. First time poster <3

12, Standstill.
The thrill is gone. What to do?
12.4 You have the right to disconnect or revive the relationship or maybe just slow it down.
12.5 Give it a rest.
12.6 Eventually you find your enthusiasm returning.

2. The Receptive.
You’re open to suggestion but at this time you’re not hearing any thing you feel to respond to..

All together I see this as saying things went too far too fast and you need to slow it down. Give yourselves a chance to be apart for awhile, then come back together again.

Hi panicfable

Each line position points to a different aspect of your world. Lines 4,5 & 6 relate to change points in your outer world. What is going on around you rather than what is going on inside you (that relates to lines 1,2,&3). Here your outside world is requiring of some attention while Yi is saying that you inner world is fixed and stable at the moment,

Hex 12 advocates that your call on your strength and character to eliminate the hardships relating to this query. Particularly to avoid any acts of pretension or anything that can be considered as showy or showing off. This sacrifice you are assured will be worthwhile to help you with your current situation.

12.4 - speaks to the decisions and choices you need to make to locate the best path. It indicates that you are on the right road it's just that you have to accept the furrows you are walking in and look to cultivate matters as best you can from there.
12.5 - speaks to the place of structure from which to shape and create your world. You are advised that it's time to back the new you and trust your own leadership. Trust will set you free.
12.6 - provides a wise overview perhaps even a speculation using future based eagle-eyed hindsight. The hinderance you are dealing with will bring with it some negativity to begin with. However it is all in your hands how long you want it to rule the roost. At the end of your rainbow there are happy times waiting for you. Do what is right for you to achieve that although be aware that things may not proceed at a rate of knots.

And all of this is wrapped up in a warm and cuddly blanket of the strong feminine, where your openness and your awareness of the quality, compassion and generosity of your actions towards yourself and towards others in your outer world will be what starts making the difference for you.

.... of course, this is my interpretation made as if it was my reading and it may mean nothing at all like this for you.

Good Luck

Hi my-key,
I wanted to talk a bit about your idea that the lower trigram relates to the inner world and the upper trigram represents the outer world. I think there’s value in also seeing it from an opposite perspective. That is I see the lower trigram as describing what’s going on in the outer material (physical) world - Earth - and the upper trigram as representing the inner spiritual (mental) wold - Heaven. Thus I look at lines 1.2.3. in Standstill as having to do with the harsh reality of being disconnected from everything and everyone and then 4.5.6. as the steps one can take in their own attitude, spiritual sphere, to evolve the situation:

12.1 - 25. One must live in the real world along with everyone else without getting entangled in others issues.

12.2 - 6. Again conditions in the real world restrict making connections which isn’t too bad for a young person still living at home but an adult wants to get out and connect with others, so conflict.

12.3 - 33. Here the real world conditions really do take their toll. The person feels shame because they don’t have the proper degree or color of skin or latest record album. What ever it is the outer world seems to require to be accepted is lacking and the person retreats.

So it seems to me the lower trigram is describing how one can come to feel disconnected, not included, because of material world considerations - perhaps this is somehow a repeat of a 4.3 situation where the Fool is warned not to run after things that are not intended for him. The upper trigram then demonstrates how one can rise up and with a strengthened inner resolve move forward to connect with others (13. Fellowship) after all:

12.4 - 20. The fourth position is the position of the teacher or guide or what we learned from previous experience, a spiritual pep talk! Remember who you are, see the big picture. “Don’t stare at a storm, flat and forlorn - Rise up! See the rainbow!”

12.5 - 35. Another pep talk. You may have to give it a rest for now but you don’t have to abandon your goal. Tie a string around your finger and never forget! Your day will come!

12. 6 - 45 By not giving up eventually your perspective and that of the larger group come into alignment. (Or in the case of the original question here, by acknowledging her feelings of uncertainty and letting the relationship just sit quietly for a bit she may find her concerns can be addressed without being a deal breaker.)…

Anyway, it’s interesting to go through all the lines of the hexagram to get the full story. I hadn’t realized before writing this out here how this hexagram seems to deal with the issues of getting one’s personal viewpoint to be acknowledged by the larger group, and how the final line seems to advise if you simply hang in there and refuse to go away ultimately some accommodation is made for you. Actually kinda scary - makes me think of Trump’s tactic that if you just repeat a lie often enough people will come to accept it as truth.

Hi rosada
Without looking to hijack the thread, what you raise gives interesting perspective. There has been many things ascribed to the context of each line position. Back in the day, I gleaned original insights from LiSe equating 1 (EE) to how to stand on the earth thru to 6 (HH) spirit, wisdom and mental process. I got confused by Wilhelm, apart from 1 not yet in the field of activity and 6 being the sage and somehow have developed some mix and match ideas with have been further enhanced by Karcher advocating 1-3 equals inner world and 4-6 equals outer world with 1 speaking to 'beginnings' and 6 to 'culmination'.

I use the convention of inner world and outer world as using this in my own readings have produced powerful insights. Thinking about it though, especially when aligning things with the Hermetic principle of ' As above so below. As within so without' it seems that there can be a natural esoteric fluidity of representation of the lower trigram and the upper trigram.

For me, I do not resonate with 6 being about mental process. This place is more for me the Heaven of Heavens, it is beyond the realms of lines 4 and 5. This I can see as a place of soul and spirit, however it resides in a place of all knowing. It is, if you like, the alpha and the omega the ending and the beginning. Change, for me, starts from the depths of our being or beyond that even and we can look at the line positions from the perspectives of transcendence and immanence.

So for all these complex inter-weavings to make some meaning I start with line 1 carrying some concept of nucleation and line 5 being the place for purpose to unleash and line 6 carrying the spiritual sagacity overseeing the whole of the time.

It is good that you see things differently as that brings a rich diversity to this forum. I'm glad too that you got some deeper insights from spending a bit more time with 12. 12 after all is fed from deep within its guts by the organic juices of 53.
