Etymology of the ideogram Tai.11

The ideogram used to describe the atmosphere of Tai.11 is composed of two groups on top of each other. The one on top is a complex group suggesting the representation of a Growing Bud. One of the many ways in which it can be applied can be found in Zhun.3 (Difficult Beginnings). When it is used in combination with the ideogram designating the Sun it creates the character commonly recognized as Spring. In China, spring begin much before the sprouting of the buds. It begins when the energy accumulated in the roots during winter begins its journey towards the branches. This energy transfer becomes manifest By the sprouting. The blossoming buds then show the fluidity and the plenitude of the exchanges between the Yin and the Yang.

The group at the bottom is a usual variable of the common symbol for Water. This kind of water is not the same as that proposed by the trigram Kan, nor the one suggested by Spring Showers in Zhen.51. This group represents the Fertile Fluidity produced by the proper communication between Heaven and Earth, the Yin and the Yang.

Issued from this constructive meeting comes the principal meaning of this ideogram: Grand, Great, Supreme, explaining the vitality of spring. Tai.11 is also related by sound and definition to another ideogram in whose place it is used to evoke the superlative character Great, Very Much. It is the ideogram seen as Da in Da You.14 (Great Accomplishment). It is exclusively when used in combination with an ideogram depicting the idea of Flat, United, Calm, Uniform (as is the case with Ping, at the third level) that the ideogram Tai of this hexagram becomes Tranquility, the definition under which it is most commonly recognized.

The universal focus here is on contractive blending (issues of wholeness) operating within expansive blending (issues of wholeness).

The trigrams read "with/from perseverence comes absolute trust in another/others". Overall the focus is on what could be coming out of what is and as such 'man' being in the middle as an agent of mediation.

Thus the 'peace' or 'tranquility' label misses an essential focus on mediating and so the focus is NOT on harmony or balance but on harmonising/balancing - and so the use of energy to be in the 'middle' sorting things out.

Within the octet of heaven based trigrams, 11 'opposes' 01 where the potentials element in 11 are exaggerated into high energy competitiveness of 01.
