Two superimposed elements are used to illustrate the idea of Jie.60. On top is the general symbol for Bamboo and below it a complex group whose etymology is still not confirmed. However, its meaning is To Go Forward, To Get Closer, At the Present Time, derived from the representation of a ritualistic meal towards which is approaching a person receiving an investiture.

This investiture was materialized by some sort of claim letters which were understood as credentials, meaning witness-objects whose possession confirmed that its owner had a mandated authority to establish a city or a stronghold, its dimension depending on the rang of its owner. These credentials were cut in two (re-joining them confirmed their authenticity). One part was kept by the mandated and the other by the mandatory who placed them on a support, as is shown in Xun.57. It is from this format describing the Measure more or less important, corresponding to rank, that certain commentators established the common definition of Jie.60. However, meanings, by extension, of this ideogram, also comes from its constituent Bamboo which, simply, may have served as one of the Witnessing-Scepters used to measure.

Symbol of rectitude because of its straightness, of durability (bamboo does not rot), it is especially the emblem of a harmonious regulation because of its cadenced organization: a structure where are followed regular knots and hollow spaces. Bamboo has this particularity that it does not increase in thickness as a tree trunk does but, rather, grows upwards as a telescopic antenna. From this botanical particularity derives the idea of the knots of the bamboo illustrating anything with rhythm from a linear development. This is particularly true of ritualistic calendars. Finally, the use of bamboo for arithmetic operations – for example those allowing calculation as is seen in She He.21 – has contributed to fix in this character the idea of Accepted Measure.
