Etymology of the ideogram Xu.5
The ideogram used to illustrate the fifth hexagram is composed of two segments: the complex group at the bottom of the figure describes the idea of things that have a reference to continuity (and, therefore, henceforth…). Anciently, it was intended to illustrate a plant growing simultaneously below ground level by its roots and above ground level by its stems. Taking in consideration the fact that this group is here used in a composed figure, the portion dedicated to the illustration of the above ground stems has been compressed to allow space for the topmost portion of the ideogram.
That group resting on top suggests the idea of Rain: the longer horizontal line depicting the idea of something covering (in this case the clouds) and the two groups of smaller lines that of droplets.
The idea suggested by this figure, based on the illustration of its components, elaborates in two directions. First, it means necessary, in need of, this originating from the idea that the rain is essential for the development of plants. Second, it can be used contextually to satisfy the idea of the expressions to wait, to hesitate, to be delayed; that is where the fifth hexagram draws its meaning from.
In the context of the Chinese written language, the portion to wait of the figure has evolved to the point where it became to hesitate about going outside while it is raining abundantly. Also, in the Chinese cultural heritage, this term can be used as an equivalent for another character which sounds identical, meaning beard. The thing is that in the operas of Beijing, the matter in which the comedian strokes his beard is representative of the expression to wait patiently, of pausing for reflection.
