(Note: I initially mistyped the changing lines-- they are 5 & 6, not 4 & 5)

Hi all,

I asked a casual, offhand question of Yi today: "Will our firstborn be a boy, or a girl?" I asked it after meditating a moment and making my intentions clear that my intentions were just curiosity and interest in what Yi had to say about the matter. I was wondering if the oracle would have anything very strong to say, or if instead I'd get mild rebuke for asking about something unknowable or idle (I'm not pregnant, and certainly more than a year away from intentionally being so).

As background, I have always had a strong sense I would have a son, even though my own feelings are neutral or maybe slightly preferential towards having a daughter (I'm very close to my mother). My partner is completely neutral on gender.

Also, one more bit of background-- I believe in reincarnation, and I'm not sure how much I think gender really matters for the soul. By that I mean it seems a bit secondary in a lot of ways. I'm not fixated on it.

Okay, so all that aside-- Yi answered me with 51.5.6 changing into 25. Wilhelm's introduction to 51 says, "The hexagram Chen represents the eldest son, who seizes rule with energy and power." !!!! Huang also discusses the eldest son as the central figure of the hexagram. I'm not quite as sure what to make of lines 5 and 6, but they do change from yin to yang, and 25 seems to be about the element of chance or lack of control involved.

Anyway, I found this to be quite an interesting dialogue with Yi, and quite a clear answer of "son". I will update, hopefully, someday, with what exactly transpires.

In the meantime, does anyone have any thoughts on the lines? Perhaps the road towards this child will not be altogether smooth, and it's a bit of a warning to be ready for that, or simply a reminder that childbirth is, well, shocking. It's easy to read frightening things into castings around childbirth but I'm erring on the gentle side with this one.

51. SURPRISE!
25. An INNOCENT child.

Hmm..sounds like whatever you think it will be the opposite. Or perhaps you are surprised when you learn you are pregnant. Hmm..could you be pregnant and not know it?

51.4.5 → 3

If you look at hex 3, there are two sons - elder and middle one,
may be a sign that you will have two babies, both male.

51 Has double trigram (twins?) of eldest son yes, a very clear indication.

Ah, sorry, I miswrote the lines! I got 51.5.6 (changing to 25), not 51.4.5. Sorry about that! It was a typo. I will edit the original post in just a moment; is there a way for me to edit the subject/title? Will reply more momentarily.

Ashteroid-- yes, the double thunder of 51 jumped out at me. Loud & clear! I was half expecting to get 4 with some admonishing lines in asking this (I was unsure if it was an appropriate question), but Yi seems to be confident in giving me this answer, which directly discusses an eldest son. I also agree with you that 51 has an image/sense of twinness in it.

Rosada-- ha! I don't think it's likely (unless birth control fails) but it's always possible. It would indeed be a shock.

Ok, now if 25 is the relating hexagram I would take it - Don't worry beforehand, the time will come for birth (movement) according to the natural order(25) of things.

However 25 also depicts an eldest son coming down from heaven.
