Hi everyone,

I had asked about the current situation between me and the person whom I'm crazy about and had received the following hexagrams.

8.3.4 --> 31

According to Karcher

Hex 8: Grouping
Mutual support, spiritual kin; change how you think about things and who you are group with.

Changing lines:
3 - A group of people who have no value to you.
4 - Outside the group. Divination: the Way is open.

Line 3 seems to be in conflict with line 4....

Mutual Hex 31: Conjoining
Excite, stimulate, influence; strong attraction; bring together what belongs together.

Can anyone help me understand this better?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

er......i'm stumped as well. i mean 8 in general is quite positive, holding together etc. but i don't know what this could mean. maybe people in our environment that don't want this romance to come true? i'm still a novice in the yi.
incidentally, i asked the yi what would happen if i started smoking at it gave me 8.3 again. what a freak coincidence...or maybe not. maybe a more experienced person on this board can halp you.

Most translations say that 8.3 is about associating with "bad" people, or something to that effect. I disagree about that, I think the Chinese character translated as "bad" really means "rebellious." So 8.3 is about contact with someone who is uncooperative, or goes against what you want.

In that case, what does the changing of the hexagram to 31 symbolize?

31 could simply imply the context of the answer...it is a situation of attraction and influence...eg, early courtship, infatuation...

line 3 is perfect in regards to flirting with the idea of smoking again.."how could it not be harmful?" esp if you have already quit.

line 4 holds out a hope though. what isnt right at the present time may have potential aftr all

What you hold with outwardly influences what you hold with inwardly, and vv. It's important that one agrees with the other. In the case of lines 3 and 4, they do not agree. Line 3 is a sifting, weeding or discrimination process, while 4 is a joining process. So before you plant your garden (with this person), be sure to pull out the weeds first, or the union will do more harm than good. Make sure that who or what you join with accords with your inner values.
