Hello.

While I am waiting for my copy of the Wilhelm translation of the I ching to arrive, I threw the coins virtualy on a well frequented I Ching website as I had a vexing question, this is the reading I got and then follows my question:

THE JUDGEMENT

Holding together brings good fortune.
Inquire of the oracle once again
Whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance;
Then there is no blame.
Those who are uncertain gradually join.
Whoever comes too late
Meets with misfortune.

WHAT IS required is that we unite with others, in order that all may complement and aid one another through holding together. But such holding together calls for a central figure around whom other persons may unite. To become a centre of influence holding people together is a grave matter and fraught with great responsibility. It requires greatness of spirit, consistency, and strength. Therefore let him who wishes to gather others about him ask himself whether he is equal to the undertaking, for anyone attempting the task without a real calling for it only makes confusion worse than if no union at all had taken place.
But when there is a real rallying point, those who at first are hesitant or uncertain gradually come in of their own accord. Late-comers must suffer the consequences, for in holding together the question of the right time is also important. Relationships are formed and firmly established according to definite inner laws. Common experiences strengthen these ties, and he who comes too late to share in these basic experiences must suffer for it if, as a straggler, he finds the door locked.

My question was "Did I make a mistake in joining a group of people?"

I do not see myself as being strong enough to be a rallying point, rather right now I am somewhat in a position of weakness. But the group of people I have joined do have a strong capable leader, is the oracle telling me if the group has a strong leader it is a good thing to join, or is it warning me that I am not up to the task of being a rallying point and giving me further warnings.

Very much appreciate any insights.

Holding together brings good fortune.

Did you have any moving lines, Eden? Or was this an unchanging hexagram 8? The moving lines are counted from the bottom up, so that moving line 1 is the one at the bottom. :)

You might get some help studying the thread on 8 unchanging over in the Exploring Divination area. Meanwhile, 8.Union gives advice on how to effectively be a member of a group:
1. Be yourself.
2. If there is a higher purpose for you to join a group then pursue your goal, but don't beg to be a member.
like it's some popularity contest.
3. Don't get all buddy-buddy with people you hardly know, keep your options open.
4. Better to strengthen connection with the group leader.
5. Invite others to join with/ accept you but don't force them.
6. Don't wait too long to join or you will miss out.

Thank you for your analysis

Thank you for your analysis. Item 2 strikes home, I do have a higher purpose but equaly I did beg to join what I thought was a strong leader because I see myself as being in a weak position. Item 3 is a timely reminder. 4,5 & 6 dont apply. Thank you.

My question was "Did I make a mistake in joining a group of people?"

Answer:
'Holding together brings good fortune.'

It says that bonding with this group is not a bad thing. If you did not get any changing lines, then don't read any of them.
Read the image and judgement only.
