A close friend has a recent back injury, and I asked about it. Yi's response was 32.5>28.

28= the ridgepole sags to the breaking point (!!)

He's a guy, and the .5 may well refer to his quality of being stubb... er... strong-willed.

I'm taking him to get an MRI today and I'm thinking 32 means that's a good thing.

Just thought I'd share - it seemed to be so "on the mark".

Yeah, although I don't know exactly what question was asked, the Yi seems to be saying something like: "Continuing in the same way as at present will lead to too much strain on the present supporting structure."

It suggests to me that his back injury arises out of something he's doing or some way that's he moving or doing things. Which further suggests that he needs some training so that he can learn how to move more intelligently or how to get into better shape or perhaps some kind of bodywork to deal more effectively with both the problem and the cause of the problem. My guess is that some sort of bodywork would raise his awareness of how he's using his body in a way that would be helpful for him.

What the man said. This actually reminds me of experience with 'medical' type readings before - the relevance is absolutely clear, but it's not so easy to draw out the new information. Still, the line points to the young man's need to keep moving and trying different things - and doesn't that also tie in with a truism about back pain, that you need to change position and keep moving?

Hi Rinda,

Here is my medical interpretation ( it is not a diagnosis yet a medical way to interpretate just like other interpretations)

Hex 32 is thunder above wind below they both belong to Wood this is good

The nuclear hexagram is lake above heaven below, both metal this is also good

The changed hexagram is lake above wind below, there is a restrainment of wood by metal.

The season is autumn also metal. Hence the disease is minor and self limiting, and the treatment will be beneficial if done in this season however in the changed hexagram the upper trigram metal is controlling the lower trigram wood in a metal season that is too strong. Hence although treatment would be beneficial it would not cure it completely.

Since wind is the trigram in distress it would be helpful if your friend stays away from wind, go to north for diagnose and treat. The coming winter is beneficial as it will engender wood. Therefore there could be improvement in five weeks though 5 months would be more approptriate way of interpretation for a good prognosis.

(All this is an interpretation and one should follow the medical advice received from the doctors.)

Hex 32.5 suggests your friend should be much more flexible and adaptable in what he is doing. Ridged lifting causes back injuries.

Hex 28 represents a beam that is heavy in the middle but weak at the ends, something has slipped. Has one of his central( middle of his back) discs moved out of place and/or trapped a nerve?
Quick attention is needed to remedy the problem, it suggests that only a professional can deal with his problem. The back problem will be solved through gentle penetration, putting the disc back and/or releasing the trapped nerve through physio and massage.
After treatment, he will again be able to stand firm/straight, and joy will be his again.

A question, did your friend hurt his back 9 days ago, perhaps on the 25th of October?

My friend had an MRI done yesterday - there is significant damage to L-3 and L-4. There are torn ligaments and maybe some bone fragments. His Family Physician has set up an appointment with a neurosurgeon, so perhaps there will be metal involved in his cure.

He did not hurt his back 9 days ago, on the 25th of October. There may be trouble with a disc, but it is not in the middle of his back, rather one that is closer to the lower end of his spine.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.

He must pay attention doing things that are repeating, they give pressure on the spine, especially on the lowest disc(32). 5th line changing into 28, the back can get cured if he gets control when he knows when to get a break and a rest.

In acupuncture the back(spine) is yang. So if the energy of the 5the line(the yangest line of the 6) can follow the yang energy of the centre (line 2-3-4)he will be cured.

So do enough exercises to get the yang in action(for instance rotating of the spine what a yang spreading action is), but get no extra pressure on the spine by bending the spine in forward direction(this will give to much pressure on the most flexible disc, usually the lowest, the most yin one.)

For the rest as Togamn already wrote , there is a changing from wood to metal. So from wood(spring) to metal(autumn) from young yang to young yin. So from anger to grief and worry. So from emotionell point of view don't resist the pain by getting angry but experience the pain and lett it guide you. There is a lot of new yang energy in metal that can cure the back.

My friend had back surgery yesterday afternoon. A neurosurgeon shaved off the part of the disc on the left between L-4 and L-5 that was pressing on nerves, and enlarged the left foramen at the disc between L-3 and L-4 to relieve pressure on the nerve root caused by an overgrowth of ligament there.

The Doc said the injury was simply a result of wear and tear on the back, it will always be somewhat weaker, and added that he should walk for excercise, and *only* walk for exercise for the next two weeks.

The application of metal here :D had an immediate healing effect - the nerve pain is gone, and now begins healing of the surgical site. He should be back to work in two weeks, and will then begin a course of physiotherapy to strengthen his back.
