I'm in a bit of a quandary....

Received 48.1,2, and 5 changing to 36.

Taking 48.2 as the strongest oracle---
The jusg is broken...

Changing into 36 line 2 in fan yao...
Wilhem refers to the first half of the commentary regarding this line which says "The light has sunk into the earth: Darkening of the Light. Beautiful and clear within, gentle and devoted without, hence exposed to great adversity---thus wass King Wen.

I can understand the two hexagrams and lines separately, but I'm having problems combining the two to understand what Yi is telling me.

Does anyone have any idea what this combination means?

Thanks,
Deb

Some material for reflection:

working from a perspective where the focus is on 48 and its expression is being 'exaggerated' by 36, we can interpret this as a warning where the interpretation comes across as something like "establishing a source of nourishment, foundation setting (a well), can become a problem if one is too uncompromising in intent." IOW there is a need to be flexible (e.g. in the context of a well, the structure has to be capable of tolerating a LOT of water but also conditions of drought ;-) being uncompromising means being rigid and that can be an issue here where the generic 'vibe' is foundation setting, set a well and a collective will build around it an so the well must be flexible to ensure longevity)

Working from a perspective of total change of 48 to 36, there is a focus on establishing foundations through a source of nourishment that gives way to being uncompromising in nature. 36 reflects both being uncompromising as well as experiencing the uncompromising. Thus one hides one's light intentionally since one is uncompromising and/or one is forced to hide one's light due to somoneelse (the 'ruler' etc) being uncompromising - reflects the interpretation of an aide to the king being really good but totally ignored, out of favour etc etc

A 'left field' interpretation comes from noting that the well is deep and so dark and the 'hiding the light' can also reflect lowering the light into the dark to uncover the 'true nature' of nourishment, to 'see' the roots! ;-)

"The generic properties of hexagram 48 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram 57 with the generic properties of hexagram 09.
Combining a focus on cultivation, becoming influencial (57) with a focus on using small gains to stand upon and so be noticed (09) is reflected in the general focus on foundation-setting reflected in hexagram 48."

The 'small gains' reflects the 'bucket at a time', the 'sip at a time'. Combine this with the subtle influence of the wind to cultivate etc.

The trigrams that make 36 can be read as "with/from guidance (base trigram) comes devotion/trust in [to the guidance] (top trigram)". This is a 'cooperative' perspective, switch to a competitive perspective and the literal state is absolute dakness (the earth) covering the light (fire) BUT NOT the light represented by the trigram of heaven (that relationship is in hexagram 11)

As such this sort of faith means one is uncompromising, but also, due to the faith, can be treated uncompromisingly. Since 36 is part of the octet of FIRE hexagrams, we find that within that octet 36 opposes hexagram 13. 13 is the exaggeration of sharing an ideology with others, likemindedness. Here with 36 we share no more ;-) (or only a select few 'within')

Fire is also called the Clinging and this trigram reflects the notions of guidance and a sense of direction, IOW an ideology, something to cling to, to use to expand into the 'dark' of the universe etc etc When we map-in emotions, the trigram of fire maps to the emotion of acceptance (and so the link to lifemindedness, 'my gang' etc etc and on into map-making, ideology creation etc)

Viewing the hexagram from the notion of general-to-particular, the earth hexagram functions WITHIN fire and as such reflects the focus of faith in a context of light. Thus light is used to shine, to show the way. Note the comparison here to TWO forms of tarot card expression for the Major Arcana of 'The Hermit' - in one form the light is held high to show the way, in the other the Hermit's cloak is used to protect it, hide it from being put out forever.

As 13 exaggerates, so 36 dampens, balances-out, avoids explicit extremes etc., the light is not put out, just 'hidden'. That act reflects the uncompromising, not prepared to put the light 'out' - ever ;-) (but also the 'reverse' perspective of ignoring the light, being dismissive, - forever ;-))

In looking at just 48.2, my ICPlus has : "[When young,(symbolized by a ravine/gully) one has fun(symbolized by shooting fish)]. The jug is cracked. It leaks. [One does not recognize the value of the 'water', what is absorbed leaks out]"

personally, I think this tradition of reading all of the line change comments does not work for multiple line interpretations. We have 6 derived from the traditional text, we need to add another 57 comments! ;-)

Hi Deb

Hexagram 48 is an interesting hexagram as the water can be on one level a symbol for wisdom. And often means the wisdom of the I Ching itself. Each line of the hexagram indicates a deeper level of the well. The deeper we go the clearer and cleaner the water. In line 1 our intuition and/or our thinking is muddy and unclear. We need to go deeper to get the good water. We need to clarify our thoughts and become purer so that our intuition is correct. When line two changes we have a variation of the same theme. When we catch fish we use the water for the wrong purpose. We do gain something, (the fish we caught) but it is not what we really want or need from the well. We still are not nourishing ourself. In line 5 the water is available but there is no indication whether we are truly taking advantage of it. It only makes us aware it is there.

On a more mundane level, line one can indicate that we have not developed ourselves enough to be of real use to others. We have gone our own way and no one has followed, since our talents, and light, (hexagram 36) is hidden, no one comes to us or recognizes the value and or wisdom we have.
With line two we are searching for something, and do not find it, but we accidentally find something of lesser value. The jug is broken means that our values cannot be maintained before others, (again, relating to hexagram 36,) the light is veiled. In line five there is great potential, but unless we draw the water, it remains nothing more than potential. Hence, once again, the light is hidden.

The overall inference here is that the proper use of the well is not fully understood. The light does not shine on the well, and it's use is hidden to all but the most serious, the one's who recognize the "potential." The hidden wisdom of the I Ching is still hidden, and it will require a greater earnest on the part of the seeker to uncover the deeper levels. The sage has hidden his light until we have unmuddied the waters of our perception.

Dear Deb,

I would like to add some personal comments on this combination. As you already know, the situation improves from the bottom of Hex 48 to the top. It might be something related to relationships, family problems, financial difficulties, emotional or spiritual challenges, etc.
However, you received changing lines 1, 2 and 5. The fifth moving line describes a condition that has not cleared up yet. There is clear, fresh water in the Well. Nevertheless, it is not being drawn. It seems to me that your sources, whatever they might be, are valuable but unfortunately have not produced the desired effect yet.
That lead us to Hex 36, depicting King Wen exposed to great adversity, as you said, during the time of Darkening of the Light.
In my view, there is a connection between the two hexagrams but I do not know how it relates to the specific question that you have asked the I Ching.

Hope this helps,

All the best,
Mirian

I want to thank all of you very much. You've each given me a special insight to this. And it has helped me see this in a new way. the source of nourishment is not accessible... a situation has happened... and I understand the connection now.

I get 36 different lines consistently. I'm hoping it will pass soon.

Sorry it's taken me so long to say thank you.

Deb
