Hi,

I've been agonising over colours for my folio, which is an important part of any graphic designers job search.

I didn't like anything I could buy at the store, which were relatively expensive anyway, and I decided to get something made at the bookbinders. The cost is considerable, given I am a student, but I thought justified as I didn't like anything else/nothing else really suited my purposes.

Finally I decided to go with a beautiful matt black linen fabric (with raw, tiny pills here and there) on the inside and spine cover, with a silver grey buckram (with a metallic, modern sheen). The goal being, something modern, beautiful but not the standard all over black.

I tossed and turned over this decision, made it, but have continued to worry about it.

Is the silver too much, too gaudy, too different, or is it a nice contrast with the black and will stand out while still being professional? ARGH!!

I asked: Did I make a horrible mistake with the choice of colours for the portfolio?

I think I did...

I think this reading really reflects the difficulty you had with deciding (3).
I thought it was a bit ironic that your answer in 1 reflects immense creative energies.. and your question is based on a binding for your own creativeXD

Anyways, the lines suggest to me that you wish to be different yet professional.
And I think "never judge a book by its cover" then "I will buy a book because of its cover!" fits well in this situation.
If you have the professional manner and skill to back up the daring style of your portfolio
cover than I think you will do well.. line 5
Stay within your limits, if you wanna go safe then do that. -6

thanks megan J

Inside I've kept things very clean, all in the grid, and quite minimal to just let the work speak for itself.

It's too late to change my folio colours now: it's more of a case of trying to see if my judgement is sound or if I missed the mark - and trying to learn from that.

You know I had a thought, maybe both line 5 and line 6 is true.

Either a potential employer will find the folio excellent and unique, and like me because of it.

OR they are going to think it is terrible, and that I have stuck my head out too far.
