Chang'an City and I Ching

City planning, Fengshui and eight diagrams
Yuwen kai was the one in charge of the city planning of Daxing. There are six earth east-to-west slopes at the location of Daxing. If looking from above, it's like the Qian(乾卦)of the eight diagrams. According to I ching, Qian is the ultimate Yang in the eight diagrams. It's associated with the number nine. So the six slopes, from north to south, were called 'nine one','nine two',...,'nine six'. Each of them were allocated different symbols and functions.
1) 'nine one', I ching said, 'the hidden dragon should not be used.' (潜龙勿用)
2) 'nine two', I ching said, 'the dragon appeared on the field.'(见龙在田) Heaven has chosen this place for our emperor to build his place, "置宫室，以当帝王之居".
The altitude of the six slopes are cascading down from south to north, but the palace city was built on the north, which symbolized the cynosure, the center of the heaven.
3)'nine three', I ching said, 'The gentleman move with yang, stop with yin, careful and diligent. He causes no disaster'(君子终日乾乾，夕惕若，厉无咎) Clearly, this is the right place to build the offices for the emperor's loyal servants.
4) 'nine five', I ching said, 'Flying dragon is in the heaven'(飞龙在天) Save this place for the gods. Magnificent Daoist and Buddhist temples were built here.
