I asked the I Ching for a comment on the bombing at the Boston Marathon today.
For those of you who are not in America, there is a marathon - a foot race - held in Boston each year. Hundreds of people participate and the streets are lined with thousands of spectators. This year two bombs went of at the finish line while dozens of runners were crossing it. Two people were killed including an eight year old child and over a hundred were injured. No one has as yet claimed responsibility for the act, but the fear is that this was not some lone crazy person seeking notoriety but a well organized terrorist attack.
I wanted to ask the I Ching something about it, but what? I decided to just ask for a comment. I received 30.5:

Weeping tears like flowing streams.
Sad as if in mourning.
Good fortune.

It is good to see what you have lost, and to mourn it - to let grief flow, like time. And it is good to recognize one another with compassion, and see how transience and loss unites us. Tears cleanse the eyes.

"For here we are dealing not with a passing mood, as in the nine in the third place, but with a real change of heart." `Wilhelm.

Maybe we haven't reach at that point to really mourn, really connect with those sad things happening around us. maybe the time we can experience a change in heart is not yet.

I hear you, i also casted I Ching last night. When i heard of the tragedy it was late in the night over here and everyone was asleep, so i reached for the Book... I got 7.2, i took it to mean that commander-in-chief (the president) is in control of the situation; knowing that he is a decisive commander - albeit he did not serve in military himself - i felt reassured in a way.
Praying for Boston.

After reading 30.5 about empathy I'm seeing 7.2 as also representing a sense of we-are-all-connected. The strong man/ solid line is the only yang line in the whole hexagram - all men are represented by this one man.

This has been a terrible week. First the Boston bombing, now the explosion at the fertilizer factory in West, TX.

Thanks for this reading. It helps a little.

I note that in his remarks President Obama made the point that we are all one with Boston. Interesting that you got 7.2 and saw it as referring to the president, littlebuddha, rather than that it meaning the perpetrator was one man alone or that this had been a military attack.

Right, speaking of individual discourses, it is interesting indeed how the same line can mean very different things to different people. :bows:
