Consecutive hexagrams

I was wondering about your input in cases when, by changing the lines of an hexagram, the new hexagram becomes its consecutive.

I am specifically working with hex. 35 and hex. 36 at this time. This is a result of a reading I made about "what type of attitude was adequate for a situation". In this case, there are multiple lines changing in 35 (1, 3, 4 and 6). Its relating hexagram becomes 36.

Wilhelm says about 35:
The hexagram represents the sun rising over the earth. It is therefore the symbol of rapid, easy progress, which at the same time means ever widening expansion and clarity.

About 36:
Here the sun has sunk under the earth and is therefore darkened. The name of the hexagram means literally "wounding of the bright"; hence the individual lines contain frequent references to wounding. The situation is
the exact opposite of that in the foregoing hexagram. In the latter a wise man
at the head of affairs has able helpers, and in company with them makes
progress; here a man of dark nature is in a position of authority and brings
harm to the wise and able man.

Do you see as the hexagrams as the answer? Are all the lines helping to clarify a process or stages? Is this consecutiveness a factor to take in count? I was wondering if you had experience with this type of readings.

Thank you,
Samgirl

There'll be a lot of people who disagree with me when I say that there's never been a convincing explanation of the present King Wen sequence. But anyway, my answer to your question is that because the sequence is pretty capricious, there's no great signficance when you draw Hex 12 and it morphs into Hex 13. However, I *do* see tons of meaning in hexagram pairs - 35 and 36, for instance, or 1 and 2, or 3 and 4 - I see each hex as having an opposite or complementary or 'completing' meaning for the other hex in its pair. So, when I draw a hex that morphs into its pair partner, I take a look at the possibility that there's a flip/flop phenomenon going on rather than an organic unfolding - in other words, I look at the possibility that the situation might be 'one step forward, one step back', the relating hex sort of nullifying the primary hex.

Interesting approach. Thank you, Dobro.

I am confused about this 35 to 36 change though. Perhaps I am confused when I am reading about the the wise man and the man of dark nature that Wilhelm talks about. When trying to understand it as an answer to my question, I could take it as: the adequate attitude towards the situation would be to hide that which is progressing -taking the literal meaning of the hexagrams... sort of self-preservation of the light that is rising in 35. Would you see it in this way?

You mix the specific advice of a particular oracle with the meaning of hexagrams next to each other in sequence. In any oracle, the answer to your question is your oracle hexagram with the moving lines being highlighted. The resultant hexagram is where the situation could go IF the dynamic of the oracle were to continue its same momentum all the way to this second hexagram.

In asking what is the adequate attitude, the Yi response would be expected to be a bit of a range of stuff which attitudes need a broad range to ever be deemed "adequate."

Hexagram 35 and 36 are clear pair in many contexts. All even numbered hexagrams are the prior odd number with its lines turned upside down or exchange Yang for Yin. These hexagrams refer to the Rising Son (Sun) and the Setting Sun (Son) so they are part of an overall development process. They also, being the 5th and 6th hexagrams of the set of 10 beginning with 31 they are the middle development and final product stages of the process of socially organized relationship. In this light the attitude required would be that which organizes the general forward thrust of your initiative in a way that organizes your peers toward serving a larger social goal with the goal in sight being able to establish an ultimate relationship that works as a foundation for your personal security and expression.

The question of the King Wen Sequence is open to many interpretations. Those who take up the matter find it fascinating. Those who don't can't believe anything is there.

This makes A LOT of sense now. Ok... at this point, I feel like trying to swim on a stream when I do my on readings... This reading makes my heart bump faster, as it resonates as true. It is like the higher self or God or whatever we would prefer to call it helps out to clarify the path. In my own case, my question was about an attitude towards something without really having conscious what was this something for. I hope I could see these by myself... A truly "aha" moment for me. I have so much to learn still! Thank you so much!

I'd see it as something like the progress and thriving of 35 morphing into the need to hide your light from injury imaged in 36. Progress first, then a flip flop into keeping your head down.

You are most welcome. My remarks are all just the structural analysis of the Yi as described in general on my website though not as well as here in this specific. Given a human context with a real person asking their real question focuses my mind. It is my belief the Yi operates on a ' Need to Know' basis. If you truly NEED an answer it will appear in terms that you can appreciate. The rest of the time perhaps not so much. I doubt the Yi answer is all that different, but your need focuses your mind too.

Good Luck with your Yi adventures.
