I got laid off recently, but then I quickly found a new job with this company. I asked if I'd be sticking around here for a while, and I received the answer 47.3.4.5 > 46. I took it as a sign that I might face some challenges at first, but if I keep pushing through, things will improve. Even though I initially asked if this job would be permanent, I think it might have answered a different question I had in the back of my mind.

I'd love to hear what you think about this.

Does the Yi give answers that are not quite what I was thinking?

Everything is possible every time you consult Yi. In my experience, it has an uncanny knack of pointing replies in the direction of any unspoken / unthought (unconscious) truths that need to have an airing.

That's exactly the feeling I've been getting from my previous readings too. Sometimes, I consciously focus on one question, but it's like my intuition or inner self has a different question, and the Yi seems to respond to that deeper inquiry rather than the one I'm consciously asking.

Yeah, my experience is that sometimes the yi will answer the question you should've asked, rather than the one you did ask.

The Yi does not so much give an answer to a question as an insight or overview of the whole situation in which the question was asked. So in that sense, the Yi gives a multi-layered answer.
I asked if I'd be sticking around here for a while, and I received the answer 47.3.4.5 > 46
H47 is the hexagram of being thrown back at yourself and making your own choices without outside help.
The text of the Image of H47 says:
A lake without water:
This is the image of Oppression.
Thus the superior person
Realizes his destiny by following his will.

The lower trigram of H47 is Water which is about inner wisdom, knowledge and intuition. The upper trigram is Lake which is about social interaction, openness and individuality.
Together, they show a situation where you are challenged to express your inner wisdom, knowledge and intuition when interacting with others. Both trigrams have moving lines.

Water turns into Wind by the moving line at the 3rd position. Here, a choice to do something is influenced by external factors. The impasse that seems to exist is caused by a lack of decisiveness and insufficient insight into the situation. Wind's advice is to examine what you yourself really want and then go for it.
Trigram Lake turns into Earth by 2 moving lines. This is about not wanting or being able to face the real problem or challenge, or that the real issue cannot be addressed. Earth gives the advice to be open to the environment allowing growth and development.

The nuclear hexagram of H47 is H37. H37 is the hexagram of communication and knowing your contribution and place within a group of people. Seen from the trigrams, it is also spreading (Wind) your passion for things/issues/topics (Fire).
The moving lines in H47 together form the trigram Wind that turns into Thunder.
Wind with 3 moving lines is about procrastination, putting things off and not expressing what needs to be said. Thunder is renewal, a new beginning, reacting directly.

In a nutshell, it seems that H47<>H46 asks you to speak up, express your ideas/plans and not keep them to yourself. Is this relatable?

Whether this says you stay in this new position for a while I don't know. In any case, this new position seems to come with some challenges.
Since you don't further state why the previous job ended and what exactly this new position entails, this is a somewhat general interpretation.

These are my musings on your answer. As always, take what resonates and leave the rest 😉

When you ask the Yi a question, it tells you what you need to know right now, which is not by any means always a direct answer to the question you formulated.

But whether it's answering your question directly or telling you something more global in this case, 47>39 doesn't look like a ton of fun.

Dobro, sorry, there were typos. It's actually 47.3.4.5 to 46. I just fixed the thread title.
