Hey People,

As the title indicates I questionned the Yijing about me dropping out of college. I got H32 with line 1,2,4 and 5 changing. Based on the research i've done I know H32 is usually about endurance, keeping the course etc, but the changing lines give me the impression that not everything should be pursued blindly.

To give some background info: I'm no longer sure college is good for me. I'm two years into my degree and no longer have the motivation I used to. It's not just the degree it's the whole college thing. I'm no longer sure if I should grit my teeth and bare it or do myself a favor and drop out and see if I can find my luck elsewhere.

Anyways, I just wanted to see what other people thought about it.

"I questioned the Yijing about me dropping out of college. I got H32 with line 1,2,4 and 5 changing."

Hex 32.1 suggests that you want the degree but you are lazy, you don't want to work for it. If you truly want that degree then you have no choice but to study and do the necessary work, it cannot be rushed. It further suggests that it is not a good idea to drop out, consider the consequences before you make a mistake.

Hex 32.2 says you also have a fear of failure. Control your fear, and you can get that degree.

Hex 32.4 you are after a degree but you are now falling down on the job, this is about finding the right way to achieve your goal, yes, you need determination but you also need that inner spark, planning, so reexamine your methods, change your approach, have a positive attitude and then you will succeed.

Hex 32.5 this says that you must be adaptable in your approach to study, so be constant, be determined to succeed, find a way to study that suits you, so loosen up, your duty is to get that degree.

Hex 63 says that you can get that degree so stick it out, you can do it. But don't relax, do not slacken your studying until you have that degree in your hand, so keep your nose in those books and everything will work out fine.

So, you see from line 1 that it is telling you not to drop out without some real serious thought of what your future would hold for you if you made that mistake. The rest of the lines are giving you advice, hex 63 is telling you that if you follow what hex 32.1,2,4,5 are telling, be careful and cautious, then you will get that degree.

Hi,thinking of dropping out of college after 2 years certainly needs alot of thought, yet I am inclined to think you are right to understand the lines as saying its not always good to seek permanence (line 1) or to follow the 'rules' (line 5). The relating hexagram 63 could well mean here its finished, you've done what you set out to do in your own terms even if you don't get the degree or finish in the conventional way, you have finished.

It goes against all the usual common sense approach of 'stick with it' but yes I see you reading as heavily leaning towards leaving college. I don't see the lines as advocating a 'stick with it' approach at all, quite the reverse - 'sticking with it' can be a dumb thing to do and 'laziness' can just be following what you are 'supposed' to do.

Having said that I'm hoping others might chime in with their views because this is a very important decision for you, may affect you for a long time to come. Just my thoughts anyway :)

I feel if you're going to drop out of college, you should have a better idea of what you're going to do instead.

In my view, Hex 32 rarely, if ever calls for another direction but suggests persevering despite the feelings and circumstances.

There's a time for bucking the system and getting the hell out but there's also a time for working within it and this maybe one of those times. To give up after two years seems pointless unless that is, you are really suffering and absolutely hate what you're doing, but that's not the impression I got.

That said, I think "education" mostly dumbs down and conditions one's mind in detrimental ways anyway, so in one sense, I'm all for saying run for the hills while you can...Nothing can beat hands-on experience away from these pesky institutions that teach conformity in often subtle ways. But then it's all in the timing...playing the game but not being brainwashed by it.

But hey, do watcha wanna do. Either way, you'll learn a valuable lesson. :)

Good luck,

topal

Been thinking some more about this, whilst its true 32 does not counsel a direction change, in my previous comments i was paying attention to the moving lines some of which which advise against making permanence a goal. Line 1 counsels not to 'dig a hole' for yourself, to try to make durable something which isn't and line 5 some independence of thought, constancy not necessarily being a good thing.

On the other hand when I get more than 2 moving lines I often read it like a sentence and ignore the counsel of each moving line in which case this would read as carry on through (32) to completion (63)

Well you willl know deep down what is right for you but whichever way think hard cos getting back into college at a later date isn't always so easy.

"Hello and welcome to Walmart"

"Do you want fries with that?"

What's it worth to you to not have to say one of those three hundred times a day?

Seriously though, as a self-taught college dropout who still gets professional wages, it's good be to thinking about how many hours you may have to spend on making a living the rest of your life, and whether that's on something you enjoy doing. I personally quit to gain a lot of time to study in earnest. But you have to figure that one carefully. 32, Duration, doesn't mean continuing to do the same thing, but it does mean continuing in your higher purposes and adapting in opportunistic ways. To come out of this with less, or being less, is just that.

Thanks for the responses, they've given me food for thought. I think there's something valuable in how Willowfox interpreted the lines. It's true that i've been somewhat lazy in my studies and have a certain fear of failure. But I started becoming that way when I got the feeling that I wasn't learning much, that what I was being taught I could learn on my own time. Yet, also agree with Topal when he/she says that "education" often amounts to conditioning. I guess it doesn't help that i'm an adult student and the decision I have to make is one I don't wanna take lightly. Perhaps I should rephrase my question and consult the yijing again. Again, I thank those who responded.
