I have been thinking about getting earthquake insurance for my new business (another teahouse), since I am in a quake-prone zone (the Pacific Northwest USA)and the Seattle fault runs directly underneath the town where the teahouse is being constructed . I thought, I'll ask the I Ching if it is a wise thing to do. So I did...and then I recorded the tosses both in the usual way I have done it (Chan Chiu-Ming) and in the manner which I learned here is the standard method. Just to see:

2H
2H
3H
2H
2H
2T

By the Chan method, it is 44.4 -> 57.

44 & 57 seem completely unrelated to the question at hand.

But by the standard method, it is 51.4 -> 24. 51 is translated as Thunder/Shock in Chan, The Arousing/Force of Thunder in Hua-Ching Ni, Thunder in Cleary, and literally Quake in R.J. Lynn!

24 is translated as Returning in Chan, Revival/Renewal in Ni, Return in Cleary, and Return in Lynn. And described as Thunder under Earth. My!

In this case, the result via standard method is about as clear as anything could be for a pigheaded fish!...

Interesting. Was there, do you think, an inner bias (even slightly) toward the second method when you drew the reading?

Yes, the second one seems pretty obvious, doesn't it.

I don't think so, since the Chan method is the way I have always done it, and I recently re-analyzed my recent hexagrams using the standard method and found that the Chan method in all cases were far clearer to me. But most of those questions were about relationships. One was about business, and again, the Chan method made more sense to me. If anything, I'm going to be more partial to the Chan method.

Hmmm, this reminds me of something Harmen said the other day... Interesting method, that of Chan. Although I have the book as reference, I've never used that casting method.

Hex 51.4

This line suggests that the shock is bogged down, ie. there will be no major earthquake because it is stuck in the mud, it cannot release its energy under this town.

I think in earthquakes, mud or soft ground tends to dissolve or roil or something, so that the effect of an earth movement is different than a shock cracking through a harder substrate, but just as problematic for buildings on top of it. In the 2001 Nisqually Quake, I lost only one teapot lid, though the walls were covered with glass shelves and breakable teaware, due to the north-south orientation of the shelves and the seismic wave. Had my shelves been oriented E-W, the seismic wave would have knocked everything to the floor, like a wave when you shake out a blanket. And one can never tell what kind of quake it will be, or how strong, or in which direction the seismic wave will roll.

I think the hexagram is telling me that the quake is coming, but that by being prudent, after the shock, I will realize that I was lucky to have been cautious enough to get quake insurance, so that I can return/renew/revive. And that way, I will not be dependent upon someone else to get my business back on its feet.
