What you need to know after predicting

In my book "I Ching Codes Predicting the Future", I discuss some basal principles of I Ching divination.

(1)Prediction is not always correct.

First, the predictor is key factor to the accuracy of prediction. For example, if the predictor does not focus attention during the predicting process, he will not get the correct prediction; if the predictor does not follow the rules of I Ching, he will not get the correct prediction; if the predictor does not read the information from the codes correctly, he will not get the correct prediction...
Secondly, the act of prediction can also make changes on things being predicted, which may give rise to incorrect prediction. For example, a predictor made a prediction in the morning that his friend would eat a hamburger for dinner. If he told his friend in the morning: “Hey, I predict you will eat a hamburger for dinner!” His friend may try to avoid eating hamburger for dinner, which will cause the prediction failed. In quantum mechanics, this phenomenon is called Observer effect or Uncertainty principle.

(2) The future can be changed.

Some people believe in fatalism -- they feel that all events are predetermined in advance for all time and human beings are powerless to change them. Even in China, some people who have studied I Ching also believe fatalism firmly. In fact, in the name of this book (Book of Changes), we can see that I Ching has placed a great emphasis on the change of things. In the view of I Ching, everything in the world is changing all the time, of course including the future.
Let’s see the example of the weather forecast once again. In ancient times, when the people predicted that the drought and heat would continue in next few days, they could do nothing to change the future. But in modern times, we can try to induce rain to fight against drought and heat by cloud seeding technology. It shows that science and technology give us more power to change the future.

(3) We should take active steps to make a better future.

The prediction of I Ching can lead us to a better quality of life in the future, and that is the significance of I Ching.
There is a popular idiom in China: “pursue good luck and avoid ill luck.” Many codes in I Ching tell you that you will have “good luck” or “ill luck”. When the code describes that you will have good luck, that means if you follow your original way of doing things, you will have good luck; If you do things in the opposite way, you may have ill luck. When the code describes that you will have ill luck, that means if you follow your original way of doing things, you will have ill luck; but if you do things in the opposite way, you may have good luck.
In conclusion, when you get the code of “good luck”, that does not mean that you will really have good luck. Similarly, when you get the code of “ill luck”, that does not mean that you will really have ill luck. It depends on what you do to change the future. That is to say, we should take active steps to make a better future according to the prediction of I Ching.
This seems a bit complicated, so let me show you an example. On a sunny morning, Tom and Jack were going to take a field trip. Before they set off, both of Tom and Jack made predictions with I Ching at their respective homes. Tom got a code of “ill luck”, but he did not take it seriously; Jack also got a code of “ill luck”, after much thought he put an umbrella in his bag. As a result, both of them got caught in the rain on their way home, Tom had ill luck because he got wet through, but Jack did not have ill luck because he had an umbrella.

Dear Xuesongyu, basically you are right, but I would add: It depends on the Gua you get as an answer. For example, all my experience with 51 would tell me, that I have absolutely no chance to avoid the "thunder" event by my doing; my only chance lays in the reaction about the event.

Hello ricciao:
I agree with you. To some extent we can change the future, but sometimes we can only choose the reaction about the event. For example, when a weather report says there will be a heavy rain tomorrow, I cannot change it into a sunny day!

By the way, what would be the fourth kind?

Sorry, I made a mistake for the post name(but I cannot change it now). You can check another post "Three kinds of hexagram changes in I Ching", I discussed Changing Hexagram, The Opposite Hexagram and The Inverse Hexagram.
In fact, there is actually the fourth kind of hexagram change, which is called "Mutual Hexagram". But it is too complicated! So I will talk about it in my second book in the future.
