The question was What is the best course of action? on a particular matter.
I read the texts, I even looked in the forum archives and I only get more confused.
#47 seems to discourage taking any action?
#43 seems to encourage some action, "make the matter known"?
Help please.

Was that 47 with lines 1 & 3 changing leading to 43 or two different readings?

I will asume it was one reading OK?

47 Exhausted - what you are doing or the way you are doing it has led to exhaustion? either you are tired or the vein you are mining is finished.

Line 1 = You feel hurt and punished and you are hiding from it all ? you restrict yourself because of these feelings.

Line 3 = You are using the same approach time and again ? you grasp the thorny problems in the same way time and again and do not learn? you will not make progress this way.

43 This has led you to a point where (or the situation is one in which) you have to choose what to do? stop vacillating? choose your path and stay with that choice? like a river splitting into two? you cannot follow both. Failure to choose will continue the trap you are in the first part above.

So by choosing you free yourself.

Exercise proper free will... not habit.

Any help?

Luz,

I'm guessing the text you're reading is from Wilhelm? If so, you will likely find his commentaries useful to you. Not that they are perfect, but they can be very helpful, especially in the beginning. Let me know if you have these, and if not I'll email a copy to you. But you will have to disregard my own notes and observations I've added to this working copy.

The key to 47 is overcoming a sense of oppression or exhaustion through conscious effort to change your outlook. You may or may not have just cause to feel oppressed. Irregardless, you have more control of this sense of being swamped than you may realize. Cheerfulness in the face of adversity is what eventually gets you out of the soup.

Line 1 is a picture of sitting (doing nothing) under a tree in a gloomy valley. This only sinks you deeper into the swamp.

Line 3 says that outwardly things really aren't so bad. It's a state of inner oppression, not that caused by outer circumstance. From this perspective everything seems as though it is conspiring against you.

43 "breaks through" this oppression by taking a stand, holding up your staff or authority, as LiSe describes it. It is a proclamation to resolve this inner oppression.

Don?t worry. Be happy. Easier said than done, but that?s the idea here. It takes conscious effort and a decision.

Hey Kev, we said nearly the same thing! Imagine that. Maybe this stuff really does work.

Hell - Candid - You deviated from the script lol

Liked your take.

BTW - When I mentioned free will - saw this reading as one where the Yi was demanding unassisted, by Yi, decision making... a lesson.

I get the feeling this reading is all about avoiding temptation, involvement and reliance on worldly pleasures.Perhaps you are flustrated and unable to see a way out of a certain situation. This is where 47 and 43 seem to suggest some sort of resolve after a period of hardship.

Hi, Luz

Good advice above. Here are some different takes:

The action you contemplate will lead to bad experiences as symbolized by the lines you received. Find a different way.

The corruption (corrupting thing) is causing the exhaustion - remove it!

Interpretation is tricky business, often you need to contemplate several different possible interpretations and pick the one(s) which "reasonates" best with you/your question/your circumstances...

- Jeff

PS. Just wait 'til you start hitting the double meanings, it starts getting even funner. =) Does expand your mind though. Really...

You're all wonderful people.

Candid, I received your e-mail. Thank you so much. I just browsed at his commentaries on these hexagrams and they do speak to me.

I really don't even know for sure what interpretation I'm using in my readings. I'm all over the place. In fact, I don't even have a 'hard' book with me yet. I ordered one of karcher's (I think the one Hilary recomends) but haven't received it yet. Usually I look at different sources, Bradford's 'Q' section I like. Also Wilhelm's translation but I didn't have the commentary before and I also look at whatever is on 'eclectic energies' and at Lise's website. If somebody wants to tell me which ones to look at and it what order (hey, I'm the scared child, I like that role) I would love that.

Jeff, my only problem is that I was trying not to conemplate any action yet. that's why I don't know which one course of action was wrong. But I guess I can find that out upon further questioning along with the right attitude. What does resonate with me is that 'the corrupting' thing is causing the exhaustion and it needs to be removed.

I guess what threw me off here is that i was expecting to see an answer in the original hexagram and then the relating one I was expecting to see what would happen if I did what the first one said (I guess I'm still hung up on being introduced to the relating hexagram as 'the future'). But it makes sense now.

Thanks to all.
