Hi everyone,
I recently found this website and I really appreciate the information here. I am new to the I Ching and I need help with understanding moving lines. Even though I have found a wealth of information here I feel like I have missed a page.
I didn't know that lines one through six had different levels of meaning and I thought that any 6 or 9 simply changed. Today I threw Hex 39 changing to 31 although line 2 was a 9 the only line I found that actually had change information was line 4, which was a 6. I spent hours wandering around here and at I Ching book of the Moon and have completely confused myself. I feel the same way that Algebra has always made me feel...hopelessly obtuse.

I need to know what lines 1 through 6 concern.
And the hierarchy of which line changes if you have more than one moving l ine. It seems that I read somewhere that you take the upper?

I ordered Huang's Complete I ching today and hope it is a good choice. I won't tell you who I have been using because somewhere this person obviously missed the boat.
Any help is greatly appreciated and if there is an archived thread concerning this maybe someone can send it to me.
Many thanks beithe

Don't worry about whether the lines are called sixes or nines at this point. First, did you build your hexagram from bottom to top? Hope so. If you did, go to 39. Read the general information about it and read line 4. In Stephen Karcher's How To Use The I Ching line 4 says this: Difficulties going, alliance is coming. He interprets this as: If you push on, you will encounter difficulties. The time that is coming will bring new connections and new events. This will be of real importance to you. Open yourself to its influence. Now read the general information at 31, the resulting hexagram.

I don't know about other people, but this Karcher book is the one that I give to my friends who are new to the I Ching.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Miakoda that did help. The one thing that I love about the I Ching is the simple humaness of it and if anyone can take something simple and make it clear as mud it would be me.
I did build from bottom to top but the book I was using told me to change all 6 and nine lines then read accordingly. I will have to check out the Karcher book and again thank you.

Beithe,
If you got hexagram 39 and line 2 was a "9" and line 4 was a "6", then you wouldnt have gotten 31 as the resulting hexagram. SOOOO, line 2 was not a 9, it had to be a seven or a five. That results in hex 31.
were you using a computer program or did you throw three coins six times?

When you are throwing three coins six times, any time you get three heads (9) or three tails(6), that makes the line changing.
As far as the "hierarchy," there is no rule about which line counts and which do not. Read them all. Some might say they simply tell a story of different influences, steps of change.... or then again, maybe only one line is relevant. As you get experienced, you learn to use your intuition as to what the message is . Many changing lines can be confusing, as sometimes they contradict each other, but welcome to the art of divination! It isnt always black and white, but with practice you get better at understanding.

~were you using a computer program or did you throw three coins six times? ~

3 coins six times. 8,9 (?),7,6,7,8 . At least that is what I wrote down at each throw. Soooo if the nine wascorrect would I have changed both lines? Somehow I became sidetracked (I was at work) either I misread the second throw or I didn't change them properly. So it is the relating Hex that is incorrect...correct?

If the second line was really a nine the first hex was 48 instead of 39 and with line 2 and 4 changing the second hex would be 31 ... :)

Soooo somehow even though I got the primary Hex wrong my relating hex was correct. I hope there is medication for my particular ailment. ;)

My question was ~ what would happen if I decided to leave the agency I work for at present.

"And who are you?"

Just a newbie here. I couldn't find any particular place for introduction so I landed here. As the caterpillar said to Alice...Whooooo are You? :)

"My question was ~ what would happen if I decided to leave the agency I work for at present. hex 48.2,4 . 31" (I hope this is correct)

Hex 48.2 you feel that you can no longer achieve anything worthwhile at you present job, you feel neglected and that your skills are going to waste.

Hex 48.4 you have gained a lot of experience in your present job which can be used later in another job. At present you should remain where you are and sort out your life at the agency and prepare well for the future.

Hex 31 it suggests that you should remain where you are and get more involved in your job there, this will prove to be successful in the long run. Keep your thoughts of moving still for the moment and be happy, peresevere in what you are doing. Also, be open to good advise, don't be head strong.

It seems to suggest that even though you feel that it is perhaps time to move, the answer that you got says not to move and to become much more involved in the daily activities at work, to be happy, contented and to learn more. It is about preparing yourself for the future.

Hex 48 and 31 indicate the time around the beginning of June 2007.

HI Willowfox :)
That was the jist of the question and the facts you stated are correct. The leaving had more to do with the ongoing personal problems of one of the other agents, harrassment, etc. Believe me neglect would be a good thing at this point. It has gotten to a point where normal function has been difficult for me. However, I did not feel "right" or ready to move on either.
I realize, now, what I had done with the first Hexagram. I confused 9 with a broken line due to the circle in the middle...not the first time I have done this. Funny that I still came up with the relating Hex. As I said I have not been using the I Ching long and am more familiar with Tarot. It never ceases to amaze me how bang-on these readings are

I have learned alot there and have been very happy and satisfied. I Ching is right it would serve no useful of good purpose to leave.

Thank you Willowfox :bows:

"I ordered Huang's Complete I ching today and hope it is a good choice. "

I forgot to mention that I thought Huang's book was not a good one at all, I had a copy at one time but hardly ever used it, so I sold it, not a good choice. Wilhelm's is very good and so is Jack Balkin's book. Karcher's book is not so good for doing readings, some of his text translations just don't hit the point correctly.

Go to www.abebooks.com for cheap books both secondhand and brand new.

G' morning Willowfox.
I just ordered a pocket edition from abebooks of Wilhelm's trans. According to the Amazon description it should have around 360 pages so I am hoping that it is fairly complete. If it isn't I have an excuse to buy another book. :) I love a book that can fit in my pocket.

What did you not care for in the Huang book. I noticed that Clarity's bookshelf review said he did not include wings 8 and 10 ? I believe it was Huang, I read quite a few reviews, I had a copy of Wilhelm years ago (30 or more) it has the same cover art today. I think because I knew so little concerning any oracles that is frightened me off.

Eeep! Don't buy books secondhand unless they are out of print! (Authors receive no royalties then and how will they write other books if they can't eat?) Also, buy through this website so Hillary, with all of her fine work, gets some of the proceeds, too!

That said, I agree with Willowfox on the criticism of the texts. The How To Use the I Ching by Karcher, though, isn't at all esoteric and works really well for a newbie(even if he has a few lines wrong).

I am sure that by the time I am finished I will own all the books. LOL it is my true addiction. As to second hand I agree with what you said but the only edition I could find quickly, at a price I could squeeze out (Christmas) was that one. The new one at Amazon, pocket sized was a Spanish edition which would have done me not a bit of good. :) I am going to look into the other classic trans. after the New Year. I had considered printing out the e-book here but then I would have to buy printer ink all things considered it was the only fix for a sorry situation. Pennies and no book unless I am online all the time. The book I began with just does not suit the only thing I use it for is to find the hexagrams. Any time I can I will definitely buy things through this site as it is a lovely one and I really enjoy being here.
Happy all the holidays

Nah, too many days in between... I'll get you, green and fresh, Dobro. Mark my words! Muuuahahaha! :D

Now, if this didn't scare the sanity out of Beithe, welcome to Clarity!!

BTW, Dobro, here is a picture of me. It appears I was a little gay back in the Victorian years, with that pose and the white flower in my hand, etc., but the painter, Pamela C. Smith, had some fancies about me and felt rejected. Women! :p On the other hand, heck, all goes into the churning of experiences. The dog knows better though, he helps me get the ladies...
