Hex 30.4 - 22 - Long distance relationship issue

I've been with my boyfriend for the past 18 months, seeing him on average for a few days a month. We currently live at opposite ends of the UK. We've known each other for nearly 6 years though and have been friends for a very long time, and love each other very much, and really things couldn't be going better for us in many ways. Whenever I've (rarely) felt compelled to ask the Yi about the relationship, it has always been full of promises of success and companionship, and it has been right.

However, I'm coming to the end of my college course right now, and the times they are a-changing. He has recently taken a new promotion and moved so he cannot visit me as often as he has been. And soon I will finish my college course and enter the world of work and I have no idea how I am going to work around him. The both of us are prepared to move, but at the moment we're also in our mid-twenties trying to sort our careers out. I really didn't think of it at first, I assumed we'd figure it out somehow, but lately it has really been stressing me out.

Today I asked the Yi 'how can I solve the distance issue with X?' and got Hex 30.4 to 22.

"Its coming is sudden;
It flares up, dies down, is thrown away."

I really have no idea what this relates to - does it literally mean I can solve the distance issue by burning myself out? Or does it mean that the distance issue will sort itself as quickly as it has appeared? (I have applied to jobs around his area etc and his company does have an office near where I live now that he could ask to transfer to). Or is it referring to the relationship more generally? And what is the significance of 22 to the situation?

So many questions, I know. Please help!

It's more to do with wherever I manage to find gainful employment first. If it's in the north east, great. If it's in London, he has to move office. But I don't know how long that will take.

I think you have kind of answered the question. Then go for whichever come first. However I strongly feel there is an underlying question that the Yi has really answered. Look at the hex that way and perhaps it will be real clear.

Thank you for your insights, newlife. Unfortunately having meditated on/slept on the reading, I'm still at a loss. It seems to be saying that rectifying the issue will be either incredibly difficult or incredibly easy. And I'm at a loss as to which.

The usual interpretation is that something in this situation is a flash in the pan...it won't last.

Maybe there will in the end be no issue to solve. Maybe his placement won't work out...or maybe yours won't or maybe the relationship won't last. As it's been going for some time it seems unlikely 30.4 applies to that. Maybe you get to work near each other.

If this were my answer I think i would take it that the question you asked won't be relevant soon for one reason or another. You think everything is changing but maybe it isn't ? Other than that I don't know. Often the general interpretation of this line doesn't seem to fit.....but in hindsight it can look that what looked like a burning issue isn't really.

i think that's probably it. I wouldn't bother thinking alot about hex 22 at all here...other than hex 22 is fire on the mountain, flickering flames....and in 30.4 something is illuminated then thrown away like when you light a match and it burns out.

Actually this resonates quite a lot, trojan, thanks! I guess the temptation when you get a line like this is to assume the relationship will be over... but I wasn't asking about the relationship, I was asking about the distance, and it was framed in the face of my own anxiety about upcoming changes in my life. So perhaps the Yi is just saying "Nothing is changing for right now, so your worry is unnecessary/will be short lived" I think that may be what the resulting hexagram 22 is about... on the surface, everything appears fine.
