Woops! forgot to add the hexagram in the title...

I've been paralysed with a decision as to whether to commit/continue to working on an important project in my current context or throw caution to the wind and travel, hit the open road and try to resolve it working unhinged abroad. As tempting as this feels, should I travel there will be a definite insecurities to face and such a decision might see the project potentially come crashing down. That said, something deep inside says it's time to move on but the risks seem so great and unclear. Hence my consultation of the Yi for some perspective. Any thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated.

Can you share with us the exact question you asked, sputnik72?

I asked for advice (below):

Could the Yi please advise on a decision to either travel or stay put under current circumstances with a work project?

You have asked two questions in one and so it is difficult to know which question the hex 16 applies to. You have asked (1) Should I travel; and (2) Should I stay put.

Hex 16 unchanging usually refers to dreams we have about what we want to do, but we are not actually on the point of realizing these dreams. We are sort of "up in the air" with our fantasies about the future.

Thanks for this, Ginnie. As I'm inclining towards taking the risk of travel I asked just now:

Should I travel?

The response is:

45 to 2 (changing lines 4 and 5)

Am a relative newbie to this so not sure to make of it. Do you recommend asking the second question as to staying put/keeping still?

Hex 45 is called Assembling or Gathering. In response to your question, it seems to mean that this is a goal around which you can unite the various parts of yourself; get yourself together. Some sacrifice is required, but the auspice is good overall.

Just for the heck of it, why don't you ask the second question.

Well, I'll be darned. I asked the second question regarding 'staying put' and threw 45 again but with changing lines.

I got this: 45 to 58, (changning lines 1 and 2).

Ginnie, when you get changing lines and two hexagrams that consitute a reading, does one hexagram take precedence over another or should both be read and heeded equally?

Thanks again!

In my view, hex 16 - thunder striking above the earth - suggests movement. If it were my casting I would interpret your first reading as an indication to get going.

The primary hexagram (the first one) takes precedence and the moving lines are Yi's advice to you. The second hexagram gives the context for you asking the question. Some people still think the second hexagram is the result or the outcome but here at OnlineClarity we say that the second hexagram is the context.

I do not predetermine the function of the resulting/changing/relating hexagram. Sometimes it is the context, sometimes it is what evolves in time from the primary. It fits where it fits in gaining understanding of the reading. I give the cognitive process freedom to determine that. Often times it fills both the context and the future development.

Hexagram 16 Unchanging

Sounds exciting, and a bit dangerous.

I agree with Ginnie about your second and third readings referring to gathering more information. Dangerous feelings are aroused when there are too many unknowns. Researching these unknowns fill in the blanks, making the situation more realistic in your own mind, making your decision easier. There's also a "snap out of it" feature in 45, like saying 'get it together', which also diminishes the surreal sensation so predominant in 16. Still, you may want to not lose all the unknown excitement as that's part of what you are seeking: the thrill of the joy, and the sense of going out to meet your destiny.

I don't see the Yi offering you a go or stay answer. That part is left up to you to decide. But being prepared allows you to be better informed as to the risks and benefits of either going or staying.

When I run up against the temptation to ask an either/or question, I tend to go back to my goal and ask instead "Please advise how best to achieve <this goal>". Taking the time to clarify my primary goal in the situation often helps me resolve the either/or question, and also gives a clearer understanding of the reading.

Your use of the phrase "time to move" is interesting here, since one of the Chinese glosses for the Hexagram is Shun Dong or Responsive Movement, movement in synch with rhythm or timing. In the Da Xiang is the only place in the Yi where music is mentioned. There is even a vestigial remnant in the old pictogram of an elephant swaying to music as if dancing. I think you may want to really focus on the timing here and be ready to move when you get a clearer signal.
