I am newly out of a relationship, and I posed the question "where do I look for love?" and the Answer I got was The Gentle, Hexagram 57 line 5 changing to Work on what's been spoiled, 18.

I am a little confused as to what this would mean. Should I still be working on my past relationship?

No, no - there's no need to work on the past relationship. In fact, quite the opposite.

You got a really good line in response to your question. 57.5 says in essence: "You're doing the right thing - trust your judgement - and you're in the middle of a process that's going to take some time and which will reveal itself to you in stages, but it's a very auspicious direction and you should be without any regret right now."

(The connection with Hex 18 is in how 57.5 takes time to work out, but that it's overall a very positive thing.)

To me The Gentle is active energy and recently I made this reading of I Ching no. 18:

If You are looking at something, that at first sight might look a bit difficult, then it's sometimes tempting to jump over, where the bar is lowest. This is the mistake most people do. I don't think you are being instructed to work on the past relationship, but perhaps to do something of a Self Improvement nature. Is there any subject you always wanted to study but for some reason or other dropped? Perhaps 57.5 > 18 is encouraging you to take a class, maybe a variety of short classes where you don't have to put in a great length of time before you're able to evaluate if you're getting anything (or anyone!) out of it.
